‘Ted Lasso’ returns, Donald Glover unleashes ‘Swarm,’ plus more streaming on Netflix, Apple TV Plus and Prime Video

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

WEDNESDAY

Ted Lasso

The pick of the week is the return of the incomparable “Ted Lasso.” How can you not pick a show that boasts back-to-back Emmy wins for Outstanding Comedy Series? For those unfamiliar with the show’s premise, Jason Sudeikis stars as an American football coach who is hired to manage a British soccer team. The new season focuses on AFC Richmond’s promotion along with Nate (Nick Mohammed) moving to rival West Ham United. Nate’s departure also means a promotion for Roy (Brett Goldstein), who assumes the assistant coach position.

Money Shot: The Pornhub Story

The internet’s most famous adult entertainment platform gets the Netflix treatment. Pornhub changed the way pornography was made and distributed by making it so readily available, but the site was also accused of posting non-consensual material and of being a hub for trafficking. Early reaction to this documentary has been split and that’s understandable. After Netflix prematurely cancelling “The OA,” “GLOW” and “The Get Down” (along with other critically acclaimed programs), you can understand why there would be questions about funding a documentary about porn, but reserve judgment until you watch it for yourself.

The Law of the Jungle

While I wasn’t able to screen this one ahead of its release, the premise alone has me intrigued. This series features 12 athletes who must either work as a team or decide to sabotage each other for a cut of the prize. The series seems like “The Mole” meets “Survivor,” which alone is worth the price of admission.

THURSDAY

Big Brother Canada

Despite the show premiering last week and one house guest having already left for personal reasons, the first official eviction of the season takes place on Thursday’s episode of “Big Brother Canada.” The hit Canadian reality series has eliminated its live feeds for its 11th season, offering new curated digital dailies online instead. The time around, the house is named “BB Manor” and features a murder mystery theme.

FRIDAY

Extrapolations

I can confidently say this series is unlike anything I have seen before. The new drama introduces a not-so-distant future when the effects of climate change dictate everyday life. It features eight connected stories from around the world and a star-studded cast that reads more like the attendee list for the Academy Awards. Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, Matthew Rhys, David Schwimmer, Forest Whitaker, Tobey Maguire, Michael Gandolfini and Judd Hirsch all appear. You can consume three episodes Friday with new ones dropping every Friday after that until April 21.

Class of ’07

Great concept for this one. After an apocalyptic tidal wave touches down during the 10-year reunion of an all-girls high school, the women must find a way to survive on the island of their high school campus. The promo material describes this as “‘Lord of the Flies’ in cocktail dresses” and that immediately made me want to tune in. The cast includes Emily Browning (“Sucker Punch”), Caitlin Stasey (“Smile”) and Megan Smart (“Wakefield”). This could be a sleeper hit, so don’t sleep on it.

Swarm

With his “Atlanta” commitments behind him, Donald Glover is ready to show off his next project. The talented producer and actor is behind this Amazon Original thriller series that follows Dre (Dominique Fishback), a young woman whose obsession with a pop star becomes deadly.

Last Light

Matthew Fox (“Party of Five” and “Lost”) plays Andy Yeats, a petro-chemist who is separated from his family in the Middle East just as something catastrophic happens to the world’s oil supply. This sets off a deadly chain reaction of events. The environmental thriller serves as a commentary on the world’s reliance on oil and what happens when it doesn’t work.

Monster in the Shadows

The family of a missing teenager in Alabama searches for answers in this three-part documentary. Brittney Wood disappeared in 2012 and dark secrets about the case are exposed as the police turn their attention to a suspicious family member.

The Inspection

Elegance Bratton’s powerful semi-autobiographical film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, is about a young, gay Black man who, after being rejected by his mother, decides to join the Marines. The film features powerful performances from Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union.
