‘Batman’ voice actor Kevin Conroy has died at the age of 66

Kevin Conroy, beloved voice actor best known for voicing Batman on Warner Bros.’ TV series “Batman: The Animated Series,” has died.

He was 66.

Conroy voiced the series “Batman: The Animated Series” from 1992 to 1996. His voice as Batman was well-received by critics and discerning fans of the comic books. The series also featured Mark Hamill as the Joker.

“Kevin was perfection,” Hamill said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “He was one of my favourite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him — his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”

Conroy continued on as the voice of Batman through nearly 60 different productions, 15 films and 400 episodes of television and video games. In more recent years he began making the rounds on the comic book convention circuit.

Earlier this year, Conroy shared his own deeply personal story about how coming out helped him find his voice as Batman. Conroy was the first and only openly gay actor to play Batman.

Tributes are pouring in for the actor.

DC Comics tweeted, “DC is deeply saddened at the passing of Kevin Conroy, a legendary actor and the voice of Batman for multiple generations. He will be forever missed by his friends, family, and fans.”

Voice actress Tara Strong tweeted, “I don’t have the words. Not today. My heart is broken. There will never be another. He IS #Batman. #RIPLEGEND.”

Henry Gilbert tweeted, “In the documentary I Know That Voice, Kevin Conroy tells this unforgettable story about working at a food relief station in Manhattan in the days after 9/11. It’s one of my favourite stories he told about the power of his talents. Rest In Peace Mr. Conroy.”
