‘Serious incident’ in West Broadway concluded

Residents of a West Broadway apartment building were being updated following an incident that drew heavy police presence to the area.
The Winnipeg Police Service issued an update on social media just after 6 p.m. Thursday saying the serious incident had concluded and “affected area residents” were being updated.
Earlier on Thursday, city police asked the public to avoid the area around the apartment building at 25 Furby St.
At least 11 police vehicles were on scene outside a Manitoba Housing complex at around 2 p.m. Officers armed with battering rams and shields were seen entering the building.
The Winnipeg Police Service had said there was an “ongoing serious incident” but could not provide further details.
Robbery suspect arrested in Steinbach

RCMP major crimes investigators have arrested the suspect in an attempted bank robbery Thursday in Steinbach and hold-up Wednesday at a Grunthal bank.
After releasing a Thursday afternoon call for public help in locating Kendall Raike, 44, Mounties announced hours later they had arrested the man in Steinbach. Raike faces two charges of robbery.
Mounties said officers from the Steinbach detachment were called to a Main Street bank in the southern Manitoba city at about 11:30 a.m., where an attempted robbery suspect had already fled.
RCMP linked the suspect to a hold-up the day before at a bank in Grunthal.
In the Wednesday robbery, a man threatened employees before he made off with some cash.

Overheated battery causes commercial fire in St. James

City fire crews responded to reports of a fire alarm in the St. James Industrial neighbourhood Wednesday evening.
Firefighters arrived at the two-storey commercial building in the 1200 block of Border Street around 7:26 p.m., finding smoke and flames inside, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release Thursday.
Fire crews were able to battle the blaze from within the building, declaring it under control by 7:46 p.m. The building was empty at the time of the fire, and nobody was injured, WFPS said.
The fire service believes the blaze was caused by an overheated battery.
