Allison Russell, Bill Nye appearances postponed due to weather

7:30 PM

Grammy-winning roots musician Allison Russell and science educator Bill Nye both announced postponements to their planned Sunday shows, owing to blizzard conditions west of the city.

Montreal songwriter Russell, who was to play the Park Theatre with Aysanabee, posted a clip of icy road conditions on Instagram with the caption: “Our bus slid off the road into a ditch and we’re still awaiting the tow truck,” and advice for patrons to hang onto their tickets for a rescheduled date.

Nye was set to present his climate-change lecture The End is Nye at the Centennial Concert Hall. Customers are being asked to keep their tickets until a new date is announced, which the venue says will be “shortly.”

Officer bit during downtown arrest

3:52 PM

One man is in custody after allegedly biting a Winnipeg police officer while being arrested in a drug-induced state Saturday night.

Officers were called to an apartment building in the 300 block of Kennedy Street around 11:30 p.m. with reports a man was acting erratically and aggressively toward the public.

The man was found outside the building “exhibiting signs of experiencing an agitated chaotic event due to apparent drug use” police said in a news release Sunday.

When police tried to handcuff him, the suspect bit one of the officers and tried to bite another.

During the arrest, several tenants from the apartment building threw things from their balconies at attending officers, including a piece of luggage, the release said.

The suspect was taken to hospital where he received medical attention and was later released. The injured officer, too, received medical attention.

A 42-year-old man is charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and failing to comply with bail conditions. He remains in custody.
