Lancers complete ‘three-peat’ in varsity girls hoops

The Dakota Lancers earned their third consecutive provincial AAAA varsity girls basketball tonight at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Sparked by a 25-point performance from Abby Sweeny, the Lancers downed the Garden City Gophers 84-34 in the final.
Darya Rom registered 20 points for the winners, while Hope Larocque supplied 14.
Meeyah Greaves scored eight points for the Gophers, who trailed 38-15 at halftime.
In the late game tonight, the Vincent Massey Trojans secured the AAAA varsity boys title with a 101-82 triumph over the Oak Park Raiders.
Large police presence on Selkirk Avenue

Winnipeg police have cordoned off a home on Selkirk Avenue and blocked a portion of the street owing to an investigation.
Police tape is blocking entry to a home at 1246 Selkirk Ave. near McPhillips Street and officers were seen looking through trash cans behind the home Monday evening.
Area residents say they saw multiple police cars barrelling down the street to the home just before 5 p.m.
The Winnipeg Police Service’s Public Information Office said police will be on the scene for the foreseeable future, and local access to the street will be blocked for some time.
Woman slain in Thompson

RCMP are investigating the killing of a woman in Thompson.
Mounties were sent to a home in the northern Manitoba city at about 10:50 p.m. Friday. Officers found the body of the 31-year-old woman and determined her death was a homicide.
Vincent Bonner, 29, of Thompson has been charged with manslaughter and failing to comply with probation. He remains in custody, RCMP said Monday.
Backstreet Boy Nick Carter coming to Winnipeg

Nick Carter, one of the heartthrobs of the boy band Backstreet Boys, brings his solo act to the Burton Cummings Theatre Oct. 8.
Tickets go on sale March 22 at 10 a.m., however a fan-club presale is scheduled to begin March 20. Prices weren’t announced.
Carter, 44, may be known best as the youngest of the Backstreet Boys, but he found success after launching a solo career in 2002, most notably his 2023 single Hurts to Love You, which reached No. 1 in Canada.
Moose goalie named AHL Player of the Week

Manitoba Moose goaltender Thomas Milic has been named the AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 17.
Milic, 20, went a perfect 3-0-0 record, as Manitoba (26-29-1-1) built a six-point lead for the final playoff spot in the Central Division. The rookie netminder held the opposition to four goals on 85 shots for a 1.30 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.
The Port Coquitlam, B.C. product, is the third-youngest goaltender in the AHL this season and holds an 11-5-1 record in 19 appearances, supported by a 2.63 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.
The Moose take on the Grand Rapids Griffins Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Human smuggling charge laid

RCMP have charged a 34-year-old Ontario man with human smuggling after a traffic stop in Morden last week.
On March 11 at just before midnight, the Morden Police Service pulled over the driver of a vehicle with five passengers dressed for the cold, Mounties said in a news release Monday.
RCMP said their investigation determined the passengers — four in their 20s and one who is 58 — were going to attempt to enter the United States.
Two of the passengers had status in Canada, while three were turned over to Canada Border Services Agency.
No other details were provided.
Jose Pablo Hilario Pimentel faces a human-smuggling charge. He remains in custody.
The investigation continues.
Steve Earle plays the Burt Aug. 18

Outlaw country singer Steve Earle returns to Winnipeg Aug. 18 for a concert at the Burton Cummings Theatre.
Tickets go on sale March 22 at 10 a.m. at livenation.com and ticketmaster.ca, although there are presales scheduled for March 21. Prices were not announced.
The concert is part of the Copperhead Road singer’s Alone Again Tour: Solo + Acoustic, differentiating it from Earle’s performance at the same venue last September, when he performed with his backing band, the Dukes.
