Jets clinch playoff spot with 5-2 win over Flames

The Winnipeg Jets are headed back to the playoffs.
A 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames officially punched their postseason ticket with six regular-season games remaining.
Gabe Vilardi led the way with his first career hat trick, while Nikolaj Ehlers and Tyler Toffoli had the other goals.
Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 of 33 shots.
Winnipeg improves to 46-24-6. They now head out on a four-game road trip starting Saturday afternoon against the Minnesota Wild.
Man now wanted for two killings

A man wanted in connection with a killing in March is also wanted for an earlier killing in September.
The Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday that Maxim Dale Garneau, 27, is wanted for second-degree murder in the slaying of Daniel Raymond Garvey-Rodriquez, 25.
Police were sent to the 200 block of College Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 10 and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and died from his injuries.
The WPS publicly identified the victim the next day. Police released two security images of a male on a bicycle they called a person of interest in the case on March 20.
Garneau is also wanted for second-degree murder in connection with the killing of Edgar Allan Bear, 56. He was found dead at 1246 Selkirk Ave. at about 4:40 p.m. on March 18. Bear, a member of the Peguis First Nation, was living in Winnipeg. Police asked for the public’s help in finding Garneau in connection with Bear’s killing on March 28.
The WPS is advising people not to contact Garneau, who “is considered dangerous.” Police are asking anyone who knows where he is to call the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 TIPS.
Missing girl, 15, last seen Sunday

Mounties are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 15-year-old girl.
Catherine Cook was last seen at her home on Pickerel Crescent in Thompson on Sunday, and RCMP are concerned for her well-being.
Mounties said the teen was reported missing late Monday night.
RCMP said Thursday that police believe she is still in Thompson and have checked several locations.
Mounties are asking anyone who has seen Catherine or knows where she might be to call Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909 or 6911, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
Police warn of another speeding-ticket scam

Winnipeg police are warning people to ignore another scam text appearing as a photo enforcement ticket.
The text, which appears to be from police, accuses the reader of speeding and includes a link to pay the ticket. Clicking the link takes you to a website headed with the province’s bison logo and asks for personal information, including your name, date of birth and address. Regardless of what is entered, the website states you have a $158.50 unpaid speeding ticket and asks for your credit card information.
The Winnipeg Police Service warned Winnipeggers to avoid clicking the link Thursday and shared a screenshot of the text.
A similar text-based scam suggesting traffic radar had caught the reader speeding in a school zone made its rounds last month.
A similar text was sent out in February impersonating Manitoba Hydro. Police said at the time there were no known victims of the attempted scam.
Two taken to hospital after fire late Wednesday night

Two people were transported to hospital after a fire in a Tyndall Avenue townhouse late Wednesday night.
Firefighters were sent to the two-storey building on the 0-100 block of Tyndall in Gilbert Park, a Manitoba Housing community, at 11:26 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the building. The fire was declared under control at 11:52 p.m.
Firefighters helped some residents get out of the townhouse, while others got out on their own before crews arrived. Four people were assessed by paramedics at the scene. One person was transported to hospital in unstable condition and another was transported in stable.
Most of the damage was contained to the suite where the fire started. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The City of Winnipeg’s emergency social services team was sent to the scene to help displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
Earlier, crews were sent to a fire in a single-storey industrial building on the 1400 block of Dublin Avenue. Firefighters were sent to the scene at 6:38 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the building.
Everyone inside got out before crews arrived. The fire was declared under control at 7:06 p.m.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a mechanical failure,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a new release.
