Deb McCreanor and Zach Wasylik claim provincial curling titles

GIMLI — The Deb McCreanor and Zach Wasylik teams rule Manitoba’s club curling scene.
McCreanor, with Trisha Hill, Michelle Buchanan and Jen Cawson, from La Salle, edged Jennifer Clark-Rouire’s crew from Fort Garry 5-4 in the final of the provincial women’s curling club championship Sunday.
They will represent Manitoba at the nationals in November in Barrie, Ont.
Joining them is the Wasylik team, with Jack Hykaway, Josh Harding and Graham Normand. The Pembina squad beat Corey Chambers of Fort Garry 8-7 in the men’s final.
Teen tasered during Norway House arrest

A 16-year-old boy was tasered by RCMP after allegedly assaulting a pre-teen girl in northern Manitoba late Friday night.
Norway House RCMP were called to a home in the Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation just after midnight about a violent assault in progress. Officers were told that the suspect had a knife and was threatening to stab the young girl and any police officer who responded, RCMP said in a news release Sunday.
Upon their arrival, officers found the teen suspect standing outside the residence and told him to show officers his hands. The suspect refused and pulled out what Mounties describe as a large knife.
An officer tasered the suspect and the teen dropped the knife before police handcuffed him, RCMP said. He was taken to the local police detachment without incident.
The pre-teen girl did not require medical attention. RCMP continue to investigate.
North End home damaged in fire

Winnipeg fire crews responded to a house fire in the North End neighbourhood Saturday night.
Firefighters arrived at a one-and-a-half-storey home in the 100 block of Andrews Street around 10:52 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release Sunday.
Crews were able to enter the house — which was billowing smoke — and battle the blaze from inside, declaring it under control at 11:17 p.m., WFPS said.
All occupants fled from the home before crews arrived, and nobody was injured. The City of Winnipeg dispatched its emergency social services team to help the displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
Investigators believe the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical hair straightener being placed in close proximity to combustible materials, the WFPS said.
Transit bus catches fire

A Winnipeg Transit bus caught fire Saturday night in an incident that officials have deemed not suspicious.
Fire crews responded to the City of Winnipeg’s Fort Rouge Transit Garage around 10:37 p.m., where they found a bus burning in one of the property’s parking bays, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release Sunday.
“They quickly worked to apply water to the fire, declaring the fire under control at 11:00 p.m. Crews then worked to ventilate the garage, ensuring it was safe for Transit employees,” WFPS said.
Firefighters searched the garage, which was unoccupied. Nobody was injured during the blaze, WFPS said.
Damage estimates are not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the WFPS does not believe it is suspicious in nature, it said.
Missing Gimli man found

Manitoba RCMP say they have located a man who went missing from the Gimli area Thursday.
Mounties say the 63-year-old left his home on Hansson Avenue in the RM of Gimli around 7:30 p.m. and was possibly heading to the the St. Vital area of Winnipeg or Ile des Chenes.
Police and his family were concerned for his well-being.
RCMP announced Sunday afternoon he has been found safely.
