Bombers-Stamps tied at half

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders are tied 23-23 at the half in Friday night’s tilt at Princess Auto Stadium.
Bombers defensive back Deatrick Nichols scored on a pick-six and quarterback Zach Collaros threw his first TD of the season on a 30-yard toss to rookie Ontaria Wilson.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers trail the Calgary Stampeders 7-6 after the opening quarter of play at Princess Auto Stadium.
The Stamps found the end zone on their first drive of the contest as short-yardage quarterback Tommy Stevens snuck in from one-yard out.
Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo kicked two field goals — including one from 57 yards out — to close the gap.
Tentative deal reached to amalgamate teacher union contracts

The Manitoba Teachers’ Society said it has reached a tentative agreement for the first mega-contract for teachers in 37 school boards, after two years of negotiations.
The prior Progressive Conservative government put forward an amendment to the Public Schools Act to align collective agreements and streamline bargaining in 2020.
Previously, school division-specific deals were made between school board representatives and negotiators at union locals.
The tentative deal was made with the Manitoba School Boards Association on Thursday. It would amalgamate 37 collective agreements into one under provincial jurisdiction.
Negotiations continue for deals with Frontier School Division, the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology and the School District of Mystery Lake. Separate negotiations with the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine are also ongoing.
Three face charges in attempted carjacking

Three people are facing charges after an attempted carjacking early Wednesday.
Police were called about the robbery on the 200 block of Cathedral Avenue at about 5 a.m. A 52-year-old woman said she had been assaulted by one of three suspects.
She told police she saw three suspects trying to steal her parked vehicle.
One of the suspects then demanded her keys, threatened to kill her and assaulted her with a weapon. She suffered minor injuries to her upper body.
The suspect fled without the vehicle before officers arrived. The weapon, believed to be a BB rifle, was discarded.
Officers arrested three suspects in the area and seized various drugs.
Police said Friday that the same three suspects damaged a 2016 Kia Forte in the 200 block of Machray Avenue and a 2020 Kia Soul near Church Avenue and Powers Street shortly before the incident on Cathedral. Damage to the vehicles is estimated at about $1,000.
All three incidents were in the St. John’s neighbourhood.
An 18-year-old man, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy are facing armed robbery and other charges. The man is also charged with possession of cocaine, fentanyl and ecstasy, and possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana in a public place.
Officers cleared by police watchdog

The province’s police watchdog has concluded a man trying to flee from police in a car was solely responsible for colliding with a pedestrian.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said Friday the two Winnipeg police officers who initially pulled the vehicle over were not at fault and were doing their duties at about 9:46 p.m. on March 31, 2022.
The IIU said the officers pulled over the vehicle at Notre Dame Avenue and Gertie Street after spotting an unlicensed driver operating her vehicle. When the driver got out of her car, a male passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and began driving off, and one of the officers was dragged by the vehicle until it stopped.
A woman was struck and suffered a broken leg during the attempted escape.
The watchdog also cleared the Manitoba First Nations Police Service of any wrongdoing in a similar June 10, 2023 incident. A man jumped from the passenger seat of a vehicle officers had stopped into the driver’s seat, fled and rolled the vehicle, injuring his ankle.
The watchdog also said Friday that it is investigating an incident last week. A male was taken to hospital after he complained of pain in his wrist after he was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday in Portage la Prairie. RCMP officers were sent to the scene of a fight on the Tupper Street overpass.
Hot weather exacerbates St. Johns Avenue house fire

Firefighters had to be rotated in and out of fighting a fire at a single-family bungalow on the 300 block of St. Johns Avenue as temperatures spiked Thursday afternoon.
Crews arrived at 4:12 p.m. and found smoke and flames extending to the two neighbouring houses. The occupants of all three homes were able to safely exit and no injuries were reported. The fire was deemed under control by 4:55 p.m.
The City’s emergency social services team has helped the displaced occupants find temporary housing.
