BBQ hose sparks fire

8:11 PM

A faulty propane hose on a barbecue is believed to have caused a fire at a Garden City bungalow Thursday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said firefighters raced to a home on Primrose Crescent. The blaze was under control just after 1 p.m.

No one was injured.

It recommends people check connections on their barbecue units to ensure they are tight and have no leaks.

Jets put goaltender Kahkonen on waivers

1:41 PM

The Winnipeg Jets have finally decided on who their backup goaltender will be.

Kaapo Kahkonen was placed on waivers Thursday afternoon, clearing the way for Eric Comrie to at least start the season serving as backup to Connor Hellebuyck.

Kahkonen will report to the Manitoba Moose as long as another team doesn’t make a claim by Friday afternoon. The only cost would be picking up his $1-million contract.

Comrie is signed to a two-year deal that pays him $825,000. He’s not expected to see a ton of action behind Hellebuyck, who stopped all 30 shots he faced in Winnipeg’s 6-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night to begin the 2024-25 season.

The Jets will now be down to 22 players on the active roster, which is one under the maximum.

COVID-19 vaccinations still set to start Tuesday

11:37 AM

The Manitoba government is reminding Manitobans that COVID-19 vaccines will be widely available starting Tuesday.

The province is encouraging people six months old and up to get free influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. It announced earlier this month that vaccinations would start Tuesday.

The influenza vaccine is already available at many medical clinics, access centres, pharmacies, vaccine clinics, nursing stations and through public health.

A flu and COVID-19 vaccine provider map is available here.

Mom, daughter attacked on city bus

8:25 AM

A mother and her teenage daughter were injured after being attacked with an “edged weapon” on a Winnipeg transit bus Monday.

At about 6:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a stabbing on a bus near Portage Avenue and Valour Road, police said in a news release Thursday morning.

Police discovered a 40-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter had been stabbed after an “unprovoked argument” with three suspects, the release said. The victims were also robbed of their belongings.

The victims were treated in hospital, then released.

The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made.

The first suspect who carried the weapon is described as an Indigenous woman in her late 20s, approximately 5-1, medium build and wearing glasses.

The second and third suspects, female youths, were wearing dark clothing, police said.
