Bisons cap furious second-half rally with OT win against Alberta

EDMONTON — Receiver AK Gassama scored on a two-point convert in overtime to lift the Manitoba Bisons to a 38-37 triumph over the Alberta Golden Bears in Canada West university football action Saturday afternoon.

Breydon Stubbs’ one-yard touchdown run and Gassama’s conversion capped an astonishing comeback for the Bisons, who scored 26 unanswered points in the second half to tie the game 30-30 and force extra time.

Manitoba improved to 6-1 and clinched a first-round home playoff date. The Bisons close out there regular season next week against the 5-2 UBC Thunderbirds.

RCMP, First Nations police investigate Sandy Bay homicide

Manitoba RCMP and the Manitoba First Nations Police Service have launched an investigation into the shooting death of a man in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Around 11:25 pm Friday night the Sandy Bay Detachment of the MFNPS responded to a report of shots fired at a home in the community.

Officers attended and found a 30-year-old man who was pronounced dead on scene, RCMP said in a Saturday news release.

Security guard arrested in August assault

A security guard has been arrested in relation to an assault on a restaurant patio in August.

On August 30 an argument broke out between a security guard and a patron at an establishment on the 400 block of Main Street when the woman was caught smoking on the patio, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Saturday news release.

The argument escalated to a physical altercation and the victim, an 18-year-old woman, fell to the ground, police said.

“While on the ground she was assaulted by the security member which rendered her unconscious,” WPS said.

The victim required medical treatment for her injuries.

On Friday police arrested a 42-year-old man and charged him with assault causing bodily harm. He was released on an undertaking per the Criminal Code.

No one hurt in Pacific Avenue fire

Emergency crews responded to a fire in the Centennial neighbourhood early Saturday morning.

Around 7:30 a.m. the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the 500 block of Pacific Avenue about a a fire in a single-family bungalow, a Saturday news release said.

When crews arrived they found smoke and flames coming from the house. The fire was declared out by 7:52 a.m.

Everyone got out of the home safely and no one was hurt, WFPS said.
