WFPS respond to fire on Redwood Avenue

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey multi-family residence in the 300 block of Redwood Avenue Sunday afternoon.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the structure when crews arrived to the scene. The fire was brought under control around 1:38 p.m.

No occupants were found, and no injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation. The house was damaged in previous fires in August 2024 and February 2024.

Jets beat Penguins 6-3 to remain perfect

The Winnipeg Jets remain perfect this season.

A 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon at Canada Life Centre improved the hockey club to 5-0-0.

Backup goaltender Eric Comrie made 38 saves in his first start of the year while six different skaters scored, including Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Vlad Namestnikov, Adam Lowry, Mason Appleton and Nino Niederreiter.

Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Colin Miller each had two assists.

Winnipeg now hits the road for three straight games starting Tuesday night in St. Louis.

Police make weapons arrests

A 28-year-old Selkirk man has been charged with possession of a loaded firearm as a result of a drug-trafficking investigation that began in August.

The suspect identified this summer by the Winnipeg Police Service’s guns and gangs unit was located by police Oct. 17 at about 8:43 p.m. n the 1300 block of Main Street near Cathedral Avenue. The suspect ran from police and a foot chase ensued, WPS stated in a news release. Police found a loaded Glock handgun in the suspect’s possession. The man remains in custody and has been charged with several weapons offences.

In a separate case, another armed 28-year-old was arrested Saturday morning in Elmwood. Officers patrolling near Watt Street and Thames Avenue saw two males that matched the descriptions of suspects from an earlier suspicious incident. The two males were arrested. One had a knife concealed in his waistband and five grams of crack cocaine, and the other had an airsoft rifle concealed under his clothes, WPS stated in a news release.

A 28-year-old man was charged with weapon possession and a 37-year-old man was charged with drug possession and weapons offences. Both were released on undertakings.

Officers Taser knife-armed suspect

Police used a Taser to arrest a knife-armed suspect in the North End on Saturday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service received several calls about an adult woman waving around a knife in a threatening way in the area of Salter Street and Selkirk Avenue at about 12:20 p.m. Oct. 19, WPS stated in a news release. Officers located a woman armed with a hunting-style knife and deployed the conducted energy weapon to take her into custody.

A 32-year-old woman has been charged with possession of a weapon and was released on an undertaking.

Man charged with wielding machete near kids

An 18-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with assault with a weapon after allegedly waving around a machete near a group of children on Saturday night.

It happened at about 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Ross Avenue and Sherbrook Street. Winnipeg police responded to a report that a male was swinging a machete through the air, approaching a large group of children playing in a green space. A 12-year-old victim was located by police unhurt. Police found a suspect armed with a machete in the 600 block of Pacific Avenue. The 18-year-old suspect was detained in custody.
