Police surround Churchill High School after false gun call

4:17 PM

Winnipeg police, including tactical officers, raced to Churchill High School as classes let out Tuesday after receiving a report of a person armed with a gun in the area.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Pat Saydak said officers quickly determined no gun was involved. He said no shots were fired and no one was hurt.

A nearby resident said police surrounded the school on Hay Street in the Riverview neighbourhood beginning at around 3:30 p.m., but officers left within about 10 minutes and allowed students to exit the building.

Saydak said in an email that “officers are off with the involved youth,” but it was not immediately clear whether that was the youth believed to have made the report or someone else, or whether any charges were to be laid.

Construction on permanent fire hall to start this spring

3:57 PM

The construction of a long-awaited permanent fire-paramedic station in Waverley West will begin this spring and be completed about 14 months later.

Waverley West Coun. Janice Lukes shared the general timeline for the project, which will aim to reduce lengthy emergency wait times in the rapidly growing area.

A city report last year described the timeline to build the $12.1-million station as “presently unknown.” Before that, it was expected to open in 2025.

The city is now seeking a company to design and build the 10,700-square-foot facility, a contract it expects to award in December.

A temporary station is expected to begin operating in Waverley West before the end of this year to help provide quicker emergency service before the permanent one arrives.
