Man drives stolen SUV through garage door of St. Mary’s Road autobody shop

2:07 PM

Winnipeg police have arrested a man for allegedly driving through the door of an autobody shop and using the stolen SUV as a getaway vehicle when he went to pilfer tools from a home-renovation store.

The autobody shop on the 400 block of St. Mary’s Road was broken into around 7 p.m. Thursday, police said Saturday. The suspect stole a customer’s SUV, which was parked inside, and drove it through an overhead door, causing about $10,000 in damage.

About a half an hour later, police said, the suspect drove the vehicle to a store on Abinojii Mikanah and stole about $3,000 in tools. Police found the vehicle abandoned at about 9 p.m. They found a suspect, who still had the tools, nearby and arrested him.

He’s accused of giving police a false name.

A 38-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with a slew of offences, including break-and-enter, theft and driving while prohibited, as well as on five warrants.

City alerts drivers of new Dunkirk Drive pedestrian crossing

11:24 AM

Drivers travelling south on Dunkirk Drive approaching Fermor Avenue will sometimes experience red lights after the recent installation of a pedestrian crossing signal.

Previously, only southbound traffic turning left from Dunkirk onto Fermor could get a red light. Northbound traffic has always experienced a red-light cycle.

“It’s important for people to know this is here now because drivers have experienced a constant green light at this intersection for 58 years,” Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said in a news release Saturday. “We need drivers to be aware of this change.”

Both north and southbound traffic will be stopped when a pedestrian pushes a button at the southeast or southwest corners of the intersection.

The signal was installed to prepare for a new transit stop on eastbound Fermor that will begin service in December.

Crews were sent to a bungalow on the 2100 block of King Edward Street at 8:51 p.m. Friday and declared the fire under control at 9:36 p.m. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service believes the fire was caused by a malfunctioning fireplace.

Crews were sent to a bungalow on the first 100 block of Killington Bay at 3:07 p.m. Friday, and the fire was declared under control at 3:42 p.m. Firefighters found a dead cat in the house. The WFPS believes the fire was related to smoking.
