Jets no longer perfect after 6-4 loss to Leafs

9:26 PM

The Winnipeg Jets are no longer perfect.
A 6-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night at Canada Life Centre snapped an eight-game winning streak to start the new season.
John Tavares had a hat trick for the visitors, while William Nylander, Matthew Knies and Morgan Rielly had the other goals. Kyle Connor scored twice for Winnipeg, while Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi had the others.
The game was played in front of the first sellout crowd of the year at the downtown rink.
The Jets now hit the road for two games later this week in Detroit (Wednesday) and Columbus (Friday).

Canadian Medical Association backs eliminating sick notes

12:23 PM

The Canadian Medical Association has joined Doctors Manitoba in calling for the elimination of sick notes for short-term minor illnesses.

The national association released a position statement Monday.

Eliminating the notes was one of six recommendations made by the Joint Task Force to Reduce Administrative Burdens for Physicians earlier this month. The task force, co-chaired by Doctors Manitoba and representatives from the provincial government, was set up in February 2023.

“Writing sick notes takes time away from patient care, and research shows they aren’t an effective way of verifying illness-related absences from work,” Doctors Manitoba president Dr. Randy Guzman said in a news release. “We appreciate the CMA’s new policy statement, reinforcing recommendations from here in Manitoba and from organizations across the country calling for the elimination of sick notes for minor illnesses.”

Man stabbed after yelling at driver to slow down

11:53 AM

A man was stabbed outside his apartment Saturday night after he yelled at the driver of a speeding truck to slow down.

The incident happened on the 1600 block of Magnus Avenue at about 9:08 p.m.

The 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his abdomen. Police gave him emergency medical care, including applying a chest seal. The man was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

A police investigation determined the victim was smoking outside his apartment with a friend when a truck came speeding by. When the victim yelled to slow down, the truck stopped. An unknown man got out, stabbed the victim and fled in the truck.

Police spotted the vehicle, which had been stolen from the 1500 block of Manitoba Avenue, driving in the Weston area at about 2 a.m. Officers tried to stop it, but the driver took off.

The truck got stuck on railway tracks at Gallagher Avenue near Electa Street. A woman who was a passenger was taken into custody, but the male driver had fled.

A suspect has been identified, and a warrant for his arrest has been submitted, the Winnipeg Police Service said Monday.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
