Connor joins 500 club as Jets down Red Wings 6-2

Plans for former St. Boniface Normal School OK’d

2:23 PM

Plans to convert a protected heritage building into housing have been approved.

The Riel community committee voted Wednesday in favour of a proposal to create 31 housing units at 210 Masson St., the site of the former St. Boniface Normal School.

Heritage advocates credit the former school with helping preserve the French language in Manitoba.

One of the first normal schools in Western Canada, it opened in 1902, and later hosted various education facilities before providing seniors housing. The now-vacant building is protected against demolition because it was added to the city’s historical resources list in 1989.

The site is slated to offer seven studio and 23 one-bedroom housing units, as well as one two-bedroom suite.

Police search for leads after random machete, bear spray attack

9:15 AM

Police are searching for a suspect after a random attack involving a machete and bear spray in St. John’s Park early Tuesday.

Officers were sent to the 1200 block of Main Street at about 4 a.m. and found a 44-year-old man suffering from serious injuries.

The victim was treated by emergency personnel and transported to hospital in unstable condition, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Wednesday. He has since been upgraded to stable.

Police said an initial probe determined the victim was alone in the park when he was assaulted from behind with a machete and bear spray at about 3:30 a.m. The 44-year-old man managed to walk to Main Street and collapsed.

The attack appears to have been unprovoked, with no known connection between the victim and the suspect or suspects.

“Due to the sudden nature of the assault, the victim was unable to provide a description of the suspect(s),” police said in the release.

The WPS asked anyone with information about the attack to contact its major crimes unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
