BookTok and butter boards: What topped TikTok feeds in Canada in 2022

TikTok has taken a page from the Spotify school of data analysis and released #ForYou, an end-of-year marketing campaign which celebrates the trends, creators and sounds which dominated Canadian feeds this year.

This year, citing internal trend analysis from January to October 2022, TikTok is celebrating successes across communities big and small, including #BookTok, #TransTok and #IndigenousTok.

Some of the trending creators TikTok has chosen to highlight include health care worker @nurse.johnn; @lowhaley, who the Star profiled earlier this year; and Canadian newcomer @makhnachov.

#FoodTok, a cultural microcosm all its own, has produced a number of lifestyle trends which have gone on to dominate headlines and listicles across the internet. Some foodie trends highlighted in #ForYou are the infamous butter boards; pasta of all shapes and sizes; and traditional Indigenous foods.

The top trending song on TikTok in 2022 in Canada was “MEAN!” by Madeline the Person.

“Canadian TikTok creators continue to make content that celebrates the uniqueness of our identities, enriches our lives and makes us smile,” said TikTok North America GM Marisa Hammonds in a press release.

“Congratulations to the creators, small business owners and artists who were highlighted, and to our entire community, for making 2022 a year to remember,” she continued.

A mobile, in-app hub has been set up for TikTok users to explore this year’s #ForYou campaign in closer detail.
