Canada’s Galarneau advances to second round of qualifying at NBO Montreal

MONTREAL – Canada’s Alexis Galarneau advanced to the second round of qualifying at the National Bank Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina on Sunday.

Galarneau saved seven of eight break points en route to winning the first-round match in one hour 39 minutes.

The 25-year-old from Laval, Que., will play Rinky Hijkata of Australia in the next round.

Other Canadians didn’t have the same success Sunday.

Nicolas Arseneault of Ontario lost 6-3, 6-2 to Brandon Nakashima of the United States, Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., fell 6-4, 6-2 to Borna Coric of Croatia and Taha Baadi of Laval, Que., suffered a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Jakub Mensik of Czechia.

Hometown favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo and Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., are already in the main draw at IGA Stadium.
