Guardians get a 5-4 win over the Tigers with 10th inning RBI

CLEVELAND (AP) — Brayan Rocchio singled home automatic runner Ramón Laureano with one out in the 10th inning, giving Cleveland a 5-4 victory over the Detroit on Wednesday.

Cleveland forced extra innings on David Fry’s solo homer in the ninth against Andrew Chafin, then completed its comeback when Rocchio sharply smacked a pitch from closer Alex Lange (0-2) into center field.

Rocchio also scored an unearned run in the eighth off Joey Wentz to pull the Guardians within 4-3. It was his first career walk-off hit.

Emmanuel Clase (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning as Cleveland moved into a tie for the second-best record in the American League at 24-13.

It was Detroit’s major league-high 15th one-run game of the season. The Tigers are 7-8 in those games.

ROYALS 6, BREWERS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Bobby Witt Jr. hit a home run and scored three times to lead Kansas City over Milwaukee..

Both starting pitchers struggled out of the gate but settled down and limited the damage. The Royals’ Brady Singer (3-1) allowed one run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Joe Ross (1-4) allowed three runs on three hits in five-plus innings, walking two and striking out two.

James McArthur picked up his eighth save after blowing his last two chances.

BLUE JAYS 5, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Chris Bassitt tossed three-hit ball and struck out six over 6 2/3 innings and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits and an RBI to lead Toronto to a victory that ended Philadelphia’s home winning streak at 11 games.

Jordan Romano gave up an RBI single to Bryson Stott in the ninth but retired Whit Merrifield on a foul pop with two runners on base for his fifth save.

The Phillies snapped an overall seven-game winning streak and fell shy of the franchise-record 12 straight victories at Citizens Bank Park, which opened in 2004. The Phillies won 16 straight home games in 1977 and 1991 at Veterans Stadium.

ANGELS 5, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jo Adell hit his fifth homer of the season and added an RBI single and the Los Angeles Angels slipped by Pittsburgh.

Brandon Drury added two hits, including an RBI double during a three-run outburst in the sixth by Los Angeles, which won its first series in more than a month by taking two of three from the Pirates.

Zach Neto also had two hits for the Angels. Kevin Pillar, a day removed from six RBIs in a shutout win, had a hit and scored a run for Los Angeles. Adam Cimber (3-0) worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Carlos Estévez worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Oneil Cruz had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth for Pittsburgh. The towering shortstop is hitting .340 (16 for 47) over his past 13 games as he tries to emerge from an early season funk a year removed from surgery to repair a broken left ankle. Connor Joe also had two hits for the Pirates.

PADRES 3, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) — Dylan Cease struck out 12 and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter, as San Diego beat the Chicago Cubs.

Cease went seven innings in a triumphant return to Chicago after the White Sox dealt him to San Diego in March. He allowed the Cubs’ lone hit when Yan Gomes reached on a slow roller toward the second baseman in the third. Cease (5-2) walked two and hit a batter while matching a career high with 113 pitches.

Wandy Peralta got three outs and Robert Suarez worked the ninth for his 12th save in 12 chances, finishing the Padres’ second shutout this season.

Luis Arraez singled twice and scored twice, helping San Diego win for the sixth time in eight games.

DODGERS 3, MARLINS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Teoscar Hernández hit a two-run homer in the sixth, Gavin Stone continued the run of solid Dodgers’ starts and Los Angeles beat Miami to win its sixth straight and complete an unbeaten homestand.

Freddie Freeman got aboard with a two-out double off the wall in right field before Hernández drove a full-count changeup from Ryan Weathers (2-4) just over the wall in left center and past the outstretched glove of Miami left fielder Nick Gordon.

Hernández drove in all three Los Angeles runs in a game that went only 1 hour, 55 minutes. His RBI base hit to right marked the fourth straight game the Dodgers scored in the first inning.

Bryan De La Cruz went deep for the second straight game, accounting for Miami’s only run with a solo shot to left in the fourth inning.

The Marlins have dropped five of six on their current road trip.
