Netflix announced on Saturday that Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia in hit TV show “The Witcher,” will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth after Season 3.

Henry Cavill’s days as Geralt of Rivia are numbered.

On Saturday, Netflix announced its popular series “The Witcher” would return for a fourth season — but with a different face on its main character.

“Henry Cavill will be handing his swords to Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia after Season 3,” read an announcement on Twitter. The fantasy series’ third season is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2023.

Cavill confirmed the news in a statement posted to Instagram: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”

“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” the actor continued.

“The Witcher” follows Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a superhuman monster-hunter making his way through a dark fantasy world. Its story is based on the original novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The news comes shortly after Cavill’s apparent confirmation of his return to the role of Superman after appearing as the Man of Steel himself in “Black Adam.”

Hemsworth, the incoming “Witcher” star, has stated he’s “over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”

“Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character,” Hemsworth wrote on Instagram. “I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

On Twitter, the mood was sour bordering on riotous. Internet warriors channelled their rage and confusion into reaction gifs and memes, rapid-blasting #Witcher to the top of the trending list.

Soon the discussion turned to rumours and conspiracies. What could have driven Cavill, an outspoken megafan of the “Witcher” franchise, to leave a role he once described as a “dream come true”?

Some users thought Cavill might be leaving to focus on playing Superman. Others speculated on potential creative differences between the star and the production, pointing to recent reports that the “Witcher” screenwriters disliked the original books and games.

Some fans said they’ll no longer watch the series without its main star. How many will hold true to their word after the third season, however, remains to be seen.

And finally, the Yennefer fans emerged to reassure us that at least one beloved character is safe — for now.
