Honey Badgers rally to hand Sea Bears first defeat

Cody John hit a pair of clutch free throws to lift the Brampton Honey Badgers to a 75-71 triumph over the Winnipeg Sea Bears in Canadian Elite Basketball League action before 814 fans at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ont., Thursday night.

The expansion Sea Bears, who are now 1-1 on the season, led 66-62 at target score time with 3:09 remaining in the fourth quarter but the Badgers rallied for their first victory in three games to start the season.

Teddy Allen had 18 points to lead Winnipeg, which continues its road trip in Scarborough against the Shooting Stars Friday.

The Sea Bears posted a 90-85 triumph over the Vancouver Bandits in their home opener Saturday night.

E.J. Anosike had 15 points for the Bears, while Jelani Watson-Gayle added 12 more. Winnipeg’s Chad Posthumus added five points and a team-high nine rebounds. Allen also contributed six rebounds while A.J. Hess registered seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Christian Vital, who was named CEBL final MVP in 2022 while leading the Honey Badgers to the league title, replied with a team-high 17 points for the hosts.

Zane Waterman, with a late three-pointer, and Jeremiah Tilmon both added 15 points apiece.

Tilmon chipped in with nine rebounds.

Both teams struggled from behind the three-point line. Brampton went six-for-27 (22 per cent) while Winnipeg managed a seven-for-29 (24 per cent) mark.
