Rosenort business fined $25,000 after worker injured

4:55 PM

Manitoba heavy equipment manufacturer K-Tec Earthmovers Inc. must pay a $25,000 fine after pleading guilty to a Workplace Safety and Health Act offence.

A worker was crushed by a falling tire being unloaded at the Rosenort-based company on May 17, 2021, a news release Friday said.

The worker was rolling a tire from a container onto the forks of a forklift truck when a tire fell, crushing the worker against the floor. The worker suffered back and neck compression fractures.

After an investigation, K-Tec pleaded guilty to failing to develop safe work procedures on Feb. 22.

Charges stayed against one accused in Portage child exploitation probe

2:18 PM

Manitoba RCMP say a man accused of participating in a Portage la Prairie child sex ring was not involved.

Scott Joseph Taylor was charged last week with obtaining sexual services for consideration from a minor and unsafe storage of firearms.

He was among seven arrested and charged after a Long Plain First Nation woman was accused of befriending and luring teens into a room where they were coerced into performing sex acts in Portage between February and June.

RCMP said Friday that Taylor was not involved in the exploitation. His home had been searched amid the probe, where investigators found firearms. All the charges have since been stayed.

RCMP announced the arrests last week. Police said Friday three additional victims have since come forward.

Electrician named Conservative candidate in Elmwood-Transcona byelection

1:59 PM

The federal Conservatives have picked a union electrician as their nominee for the Elmwood-Transcona byelection.

Colin Reynolds, a member of IBEW Local 2085, will be vying for the traditionally NDP-held seat in east Winnipeg.

“Jagmeet Singh and Justin Trudeau’s costly coalition does not represent union workers like me. Thanks to the NDP and Liberals in Ottawa, everything is more expensive, and crime and chaos run rampant in Winnipeg streets. Enough is enough,” Reynolds said in a news release Friday.

The NDP chose Leila Dance, executive director of the Transcona BIZ, as its candidate in May, succeeding Daniel Blaikie. He resigned his seat in February to work for Premier Wab Kinew.

The Liberals have yet to announce a candidate.

The date of the byelection must be announced before Sept. 29 and must be held at least 36 days but no more than 50 days after the day it is announced.

Sea Bears to open upper bowl for final regular season home game

1:45 PM

Seats in the upper bowl at Canada Life Centre will be available for the Winnipeg Sea Bears’ regular season home finale — labelled Fan Appreciate Night — against the Calgary Surge on July 23.

The move comes in response to high demand as the franchise nears the end of its second campaign in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

The club opened the 300 level for the first time in last year’s playoff game against the Edmonton Stingers. That contest saw a season-high 10,580 fans pack the downtown arena.

The final home game of 2024 figures to be filled with playoff implications, as the Sea Bears (7-9) cling to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference by 1.5 games over the Saskatchewan Rattlers with four games remaining.

Winnipeg hosts Saskatchewan — led by former Sea Bears star Teddy Allen — on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).

Heat advisory issued for northwest Manitoba

1:20 PM

The Manitoba government is warning communities in northwest Manitoba to take precautions ahead of hot and humid conditions expected throughout the weekend.

Flin Flon, Grand Rapids, Lynn Lake, Norway House Cree Nation, The Pas, Pukatawagan and as far south as Hunter’s Point are expected to reach 29 C or higher, the province said in a news release Friday.

Overnight temperatures are not expected to drop below 16 C over the weekend.

Older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illness, people who work outside and people living alone are at heightened risk of heat-related illness and should take extra precautions, the release said.

Symptoms of heat illness can include dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, headache and/or fast breathing.

If you think someone is suffering from heat-related illness, call for help, move them to a cool place if possible, apply cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing and fan the person as much as possible.

Drinking plenty of liquids, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, planning outdoor activities during cooler times of day, limiting alcohol consumption and staying away from direct sunlight can help prevent heat-related illness.

Winnipeg airport warns travellers to check flights amid global tech outage

9:03 AM

The Winnipeg Airport Authority has warned passengers to double-check the status of their flights this morning, amid a global technology issue that’s grounded planes and knocked other important systems offline.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack — and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows. It has affected airlines, banks, hospitals and media outlets.

In Winnipeg, the airport authority said in a social media post that the outage is affecting multiple airlines and might cause delays or cancellations. The authority also advised travellers not to come to the airport if their flight had been cancelled.
