Three hurt in downtown fire

Three people are in hospital in stable condition after fire broke out at a four-storey apartment building in the 200 block of Vaughan Street downtown.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the blaze began just before 7 p.m. Firefighters helped evacuate residents who were inside the building. Other residents had got out before crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Residents in suites that are not damaged from smoke and fire have returned to their suites, a news release said.

IIU investigating OCN man’s injuries

Manitoba’s police watchdog has opened an investigation into injuries sustained by a man detained by police Monday in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

A First Nation safety officer called to a licensed establishment in the community fell on top of the man, who was unco-operative and believed to be intoxicated while being detained, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a release Friday.

Before he was to be released from police detention the following day, the man complained of a sore chest. He was transported to hospital in Thompson, where he was diagnosed with fractured ribs and a punctured lung. He was later transported to hospital in Winnipeg.

The IIU is mandated to investigate serious injuries involving police in Manitoba.

Contraband seized at Stony

A lengthy list of prohibited items, including methamphetamine, were seized in the medium-security unit at Stony Mountain Institution, the Correctional Service of Canada said Friday.

Along with meth and unidentified pills, prison officials seized cellphones and a charger, a smart watch, wireless headphones, charging cables, memory devices and a lighter.

The “institutional value” of the goods was estimated at about $85,000.

Firefighters douse North End fire

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews put out a blaze Friday morning at a single-storey house on the 800 block of Pritchard Avenue.

Crews arrived at 6 a.m., after reports of a fire at the unoccupied house. The blaze was declared under control by 6:39 a.m. No occupants were found inside the house.

A WFPS arson dog helped at the scene and the cause remains under investigation.

Cyclist charged in road rage incident

A suspect is in police custody after police say he threatened a Winnipeg man with a knife over a traffic dispute.

The incident occurred Wednesday around 7 p.m. when the victim was travelling eastbound on James Avenue toward Main Street. The suspect, who was riding a bicycle, “took exception to sharing the roadway” and threw the bike at the man’s vehicle, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

The victim stopped his vehicle to remove the bicycle, which had become lodged underneath, police said.

“The suspect proceeded to yell obscenities at the victim, approached him and threatened him while armed with a knife. The victim left the area and summoned police,” WPS said.

Officers arrived on scene and arrested the suspect, who was found to be carrying a knife. The 23-year-old victim was uninjured, police said.

The suspect gave a false name when he was arrested but his true identity was later revealed, police said.

Chance Sean Kennedy, 45, of Winnipeg, is charged with assault with a weapon, identify fraud, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Suspect arrested, charged after crash in stolen vehicle

A Winnipeg man is facing charges after police say he crashed a stolen vehicle while attempting to avoid officers in the North End on Wednesday.

City police were patrolling in the area around 12:30 a.m. when they spotted a 2014 Honda Civic EX that had been reported stolen on Oct. 27 from the 100 block of Edmonton Street, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

The vehicle was “being operated erratically” and officers began to follow it from a distance. It later collided with a civilian vehicle near Watt Street and Talbot Avenue and a suspect immediately fled on foot, police said.

Investigators used police dogs to track the suspect to the 500 block of Riverton Avenue, where he was arrested. Nobody was injured in the incident, police said.

Ricky Clarence Arthur Brightnose, 35, of Winnipeg, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Man charged in Flora Avenue shooting

City police have laid charges in connection to a shooting that hospitalized a Winnipeg man last month.

An investigation was launched Oct. 10 after a 25-year-old man arrived in an emergency room at 9:30 p.m. with gunshot wounds and hospital staff alerted police. Investigators identified a suspect after learning the victim was injured in the 700 block of Flora Avenue, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

Police said the victim attended the suspect’s home regarding a dispute over personal property. The confrontation escalated and the victim was seriously injured when the suspect fired a shotgun and struck him in the upper body.

Officers arrested a suspect Wednesday around 3 p.m. in the 1000 block of Logan Avenue.

Stone Michael Fraser, 25, of Winnipeg, is charged with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He was detained in custody.

The suspect and the victim are previously known to one another. No other arrests have been made, police said.

Security guard stabbed on the job

A Winnipeg security guard was stabbed on the job Tuesday night after getting into an argument with an armed woman.

The 30-year-old man was sent to hospital in stable condition around 7:45 p.m., when city police found him wounded in the upper body inside an apartment complex in the 400 block of Edmonton Street, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

Investigators learned the security guard was patrolling the apartment building when he became involved in a verbal dispute with a woman. The argument escalated and the suspect attacked him with an edged weapon before fleeing, police said.

The victim did not know the woman who attacked him, WPS said.
