Jets lead Sabres 3-1 after two periods

Goals from Cole Perfetti, Mason Appleton and Nikolaj Ehlers have the Winnipeg Jets holding a 3-1 lead over the Buffalo Sabres after two periods of play at Canada Life Centre on Friday night.

Perfetti extended his point streak to eight games on his sixth goal of the campaign, while Nino Niederreiter and Vladislav Namestnikov each have a pair of assists.

Alex Tuch has the lone goal for the Sabres.

Connor Hellebuyck has made 15 saves for the Jets, while Eric Comrie has turned aside eight of the 11 shots he’s faced.

Connor Hellebuyck turned aside all six shots he faced, while former Jets netminder Eric Comrie made seven saves for the visitors.
The Jets made several changes to the lineup, inserting David Gustafsson and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby up front, while Nate Schmidt was a healthy scratch on defence, allowing Logan Stanley to play consecutive games for the first time this season.
This is the fourth of five games on this lengthy homestand.

Fire on Jubilee Avenue extinguished

Crews extinguished a house fire on Jubilee Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were sent to the single-family home in the 500 block of Jubilee Avenue at 12:01 p.m. and fought the fire from inside, declaring it under control at 12:34 p.m.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the fire was accidental, caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

Brandon man charged after standoff in Main Street business

A Brandon man is accused of trying to stab a Main Street business employee before harming himself with a knife in a bizarre stand-off on Thursday morning.

Winnipeg police officers were called to the business on the 900 block of Main Street at about 9:50 a.m., where they were told a distressed man who had tried to stab the employee was still inside.

Four women in the building had managed to lock themselves in separate rooms within the business, police say.

Officers spotted the man in the lobby, holding the knife, police say. He had locked the front doors and was refusing to drop the weapon.

Police add as officers were trying to get inside, he began to hurt himself. Once police managed to get in, the suspect sprayed a fire extinguisher at them.

Officers pepper-sprayed the suspect and used a Taser electroshock weapon on him before getting him in handcuffs, police say. He was taken to hospital for his knife wounds.

A 27-year-old man from Brandon has been charged with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count each of assault peace officer, resist peace officer and mischief under $5,000. He was detained.

Man found dead on Arlington Street ID’d

City police have released the name of a man who died after he was found injured on a sidewalk along Arlington Street.

Peter Filip, 27, was found in the 1100 block of Arlington at about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Police gave the man emergency medical care, applying a chest seal on him and doing CPR. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s homicide unit is continuing to investigate the man’s death. Police are again asking anyone with information about the incident, or security video, to call the unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
