Train derails at Fermor Avenue and Perimeter Highway

4:55 PM

Winnipeg police are warning the public of a “major train derailment” on Fermor Avenue at the Perimeter Highway that injured at least one person.

The Winnipeg Police Service said all southbound lanes on Fermor are closed, while one northbound lane is open. There was also a semi-truck collision, police said.

In a video posted to social media, police spokesman Const. Steve Spencer asked all motorists to avoid the area and to expect major delays in the area.

“There’s traffic (police) units as well as fire paramedics on scene, they’re expecting STARS (helicopter ambulance) to land to take a patient to hospital,” he said in the video.

He said at this point police have not received any reports of hazardous material spilling due to the derailment.

Building cleared after carbon monoxide scare

4:49 PM

Firefighters were sent to a high-rise residential building on Evergreen Place on Friday after a carbon monoxide alarm sounded.

Crews were sent to the building at 8:12 a.m. After measuring carbon monoxide levels, firefighters helped some residents head to a safe area while directing others to remain in place.

Residents were able to return to their suites after fire crews ventilated the building. Preliminary observations suggest the problem might be related to the building’s heating system, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

Later that day, crews extinguished a fire in a house in the first 100 block of Teakwood Avenue. Firefighters were sent there at 12:08 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 12:30 p.m.

Part of Portage Avenue to be reduced to one lane till March

4:38 PM

Westbound Portage Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic between Strathcona and Empress streets starting Monday.

The lanes are being closed to accommodate Manitoba Hydro work around Omand’s Creek. The work is expected to continue until March.

Access to properties within the construction area will be maintained.

Two Manitoba Hydro underground chambers containing important electrical equipment, built in 1939, need to be replaced. The work must be done in winter, when there is the least risk of water entering the work area and damaging equipment or creating a hazard, a Friday news release stated.

“We realize this creates a significant traffic disruption, and we appreciate the public’s patience,” Hydro spokesman Peter Chura said in the release.

A Transit stop will be cancelled during the closure. Riders will have to board and disembark one stop earlier or later.

Boy, 17, fatally shot by RCMP in Norway House Cree Nation

3:12 PM

RCMP fatally shot a 17-year-old boy they said was armed “with an edged weapon” in Norway House Cree Nation early Friday.

Police received a call for help from a home on Niska View at about 1:43 a.m. A resident said a male was high, agitated and armed, and officers found the teen outside. He refused “numerous orders to drop the weapon” and advanced towards officers, RCMP said in a news release. An RCMP officer then shot him.

Officers gave the teen medical aid until emergency crews arrived. He was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba asked witnesses or anyone who has information or video related to the incident to call the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

Man tries to stab police officer through vehicle door

10:55 AM

A man has been charged with trying to stab an officer through the open window of a police vehicle.

Police were called at 4:22 p.m. Thursday about a man armed with a gun in the Point Douglas area. Officers, including members of the Winnipeg Police Service’s tactical support team and canine unit, were sent there.

Members of the major crimes unit, who were in the area on an unrelated matter, saw a man matching the suspect’s description in a lane behind the first 100 block of Lorne Avenue.

“As an officer exited their vehicle, the suspect brandished a knife and attempted to stab them through the open window. The officer successfully used the door as a shield and was not injured during the assault,” the WPS said in a news release Friday.

Police seized the knife and a replica firearm.

A 28-year-old Winnipeg man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of possession of a weapon. He was detained in custody.
