Bombers Neufeld sidelined vs. Lions

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be missing a key part of their offensive line when they play the B.C. Lions tonight, the CFL club announced Friday afternoon.
All-star right guard Patrick Neufeld has been sidelined for an undisclosed personal reason, and while he will remain on the team’s 45-man roster, he has been deemed a healthy scratch and will not dress. Taking his starting spot is Tui Eli, who is in the first of a three-year contract with the Bombers.
Kickoff is at 9 p.m. CT at BC Place.
Jets’ Heinola suffers broken ankle

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Ville Heinola is expected to miss between 8-12 weeks after suffering a broken ankle on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old may require surgery, according to coach Rick Bowness.
Heinola was injured after colliding with Ottawa’s Erik Brannstrom late in the first period. He was in line to earn an opening-night roster spot after having a strong camp with the Jets.
Former Kapyong Barracks site one step closer to development

Peguis First Nation members have voted in favour of creating a single land management system for the former Kapyong Barracks site, which is now Canada’s largest urban reserve.
In December, the site, known as Naawi-Oodena, was repatriated to the seven Treaty One First Nations, which have individual land management systems.
Treaty One said it is essential that all seven operate under a unanimous system to effectively govern and manage jointly held lands.
Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation members gave their approval Sept. 14. Additional communities will hold ratification votes this month.
Firefighter hurt in Alexander Avenue blaze

A firefighter was injured responding to a blaze in a home in the Weston area Friday morning.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to the one-and-a-half-storey house on the 1200 block of Alexander Avenue, between Winks and Yeomans streets, just after 6:30 a.m.
WFPS says firefighters saw smoke coming from the house and got inside, declaring the fire under control by 7:21 a.m. One firefighter was hurt at the scene, but did not need to go to hospital.
The one resident in the house escaped safely with two dogs. The city’s emergency social services team helped the resident find a place to stay temporarily, WFPS says.
Firefighters suspect the blaze was sparked accidentally by an overheated battery.
Trans-Canada Highway reopened

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed in both directions west of Portage la Prairie after a motor vehicle crash.
The highway has since reopened.
The initial closure was announced shortly after 7 a.m.
Vehicle fire spreads to multi-family home

A vehicle fire spread to a multi-family residence in North River Heights on Thursday night.
Firefighters were sent to the two-storey, multi-family home in the 100 block of Niagara Street at 9:17 p.m. and found several vehicles engulfed in flames.
While working to extinguish the blaze, firefighters discovered the fire had spread to the building. Crews declared the fire under control at 11:24 p.m.
No injuries were reported, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Friday morning.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide shelter for residents, and the City of Winnipeg’s emergency social services team helped displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
