Black Hawk chopper takes flight

4:49 PM

Black Hawk helicopter flights began along Manitoba’s border with the United States on Sunday.

Canada’s government announced last week it was sending drones and leased Black Hawk helicopters to increase security along the border, days before Donald Trump’s scheduled inauguration as president. Trump had threatened to impose tariffs unless Canada tightened border security.

“The flights will target all illegal activity along the border; this includes searching for individuals who illegally enter Canada between official ports of entries and for the human smugglers who facilitate their travel,” Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday.

“It will also be used to detect and stop illegal smuggling and trafficking of contraband such as illicit drugs into, and out of, Canada.”

A Dauphin woman is facing charges after she allegedly hit an RCMP officer with her vehicle while fleeing a parking lot.

RCMP tried to speak with the driver after they saw the vehicle stopped at a business on Main Street at about 2:05 a.m. Saturday. The driver refused to comply with the Mountie and drove off, striking the officer, who suffered a minor injury, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

The vehicle went south on Main Street, then hit a snowbank while making a turn onto another street.

The woman, who refused to get out of the vehicle, was arrested after officers reached through the open window to open the door.
The 40-year-old woman later provided breath samples that were more than twice the legal limit, RCMP said. She is facing charges of assaulting a police officer, flight from police, driving while impaired and dangerous driving. She was released from police custody.
