Water leak closes Pavilion at Assiniboine Park

5:17 PM

The Pavilion at Assiniboine Park is closed until further notice after a water leak sparked an electrical fire Saturday morning.

The fire was extinguished quickly and did not spread, but the building was temporarily without water, electricity, and heat and had to be closed, communications director Laura Cabak said in an email Monday afternoon.

No art or gallery space was damaged as a result of the incident, Cabak said.

Services are fully restored and a clean-up of the building is underway. The Pavilion is expected to reopen to visitors in the next couple of days.

Councillor pushes for park renaming

2:12 PM

A Winnipeg city councillor wants to pay tribute to the Inuit community by renaming one of the city’s parks.

Coun. Brian Mayes put forth a motion at the Riel Community Committee Jan. 26 meeting to rename Bonaventure Park to Tunngasugit Park in the city’s Bonavista neighbourhood.

“Tunngasugit” translates to “welcome” in Inuktitut, a language used by Inuit.

Mayes said the idea came from working with board members for the Winnipeg Art Gallery/Qaumajug.

“Stephen Borys (the director of WAG/Qaumajuq) talks about learning about the north, and I want to thank him for making me think about this part of Canada and its people.” Mayes said in an emailed statement.

Partnering organization the Tunngasugit Centre said in a letter to the committee the renaming gives people the chance to learn words in Inuktitut, and also “strays away from naming a park after a human person as this can become contentious with others in the community.”

Connor to join Hellebuyck, Bowness at NHL All-Star showcase

2:08 PM

Winnipeg Jets sniper Kyle Connor has been added to the roster for the 2024 NHL All-Star weekend.

He’ll join Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and head coach Rick Bowness in Toronto Feb. 1-3.

Connor, 27, leads Winnipeg with 18 goals this season, despite missing 16 games owing to a knee injury.

This will be his second NHL All-Star Game appearance after he played in the 2022 event in Las Vegas.

Top Jets’ prospect Chaz Lucius on the shelf again

1:47 PM

Manitoba Moose forward Chaz Lucius, one of the Winnipeg Jets’ top prospects, will undergo season-ending ankle surgery, head coach Mark Morrison confirmed Monday.

“We’ll see Chaz around a lot in rehab here with the team and still be a big part of it here, but he is having surgery,” Morrison said after practice.

The 20-year-old had two goals and 11 assists in 17 games with the Moose, in what was supposed to be his first full season of professional hockey.

Lucius has shown a tremendous ability to produce offensively when he’s on the ice — a big reason he was drafted 18th overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft — but has been hampered by injuries with separate knee, shoulder and now two ankle injuries that have all required surgery in the last four years.

He’s played in just 59 games over the last three seasons in the NCAA, AHL and Western Hockey League and hasn’t played more than 24 games in a season since 2019-20 with the U.S National under-17 Team.

Suspect tries to punch Winnipeg police officer outside headquarters

1:22 PM

A man who allegedly tried to punch a Winnipeg police officer outside of police headquarters early Monday morning is facing charges.

Police said patrol officers were sitting in a marked cruiser car outside of the Smith Street police building at about 1:45 a.m., when a man tried to punch the officer in the driver’s seat through its open window.

The man then threw a metal garbage bin through the front windows of the adjacent Canada Post office and shattered the panes, police said, before entering the lobby. He tried to use an elevator to get to an upper floor, but security guards prevented him exiting the elevator, police said.

The man got off the elevator again on the main floor, where he picked up a piece of glass and approached police, who used a Taser on him before getting him into handcuffs. No one was hurt, police said.

A 25-year-old man from Garden Hill First Nation will be charged with assaulting a peace officer and break and enter with intent. He was released on a promise to appear.
