Young boy killed in Winkler while tobogganing

A five-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and killed while tobogganing in Winkler on Sunday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m. Winkler police responded to a call about a child that had been hit by a vehicle in a residential bay.

Investigation revealed the child had been sliding down a snow hill and onto the street with a toboggan when he was ran over by a car leaving a home in the bay, Winkler police said in a press release.

The driver didn’t notice the boy tobogganing when he was driving and struck him, the release said.

The child was transported to Boundary Trails Health Centre where he died from his injuries.

No charges have been laid at this time.

New York’s A Boogie Wit da Hoodie rapping at arena Sept. 15

New York rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie announced Monday he’ll play the Canada Life Centre on Sept. 15.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca, however there are presales scheduled as early as Tuesday at 10 a.m. Prices were not announced

The Winnipeg date is part of a 39-show tour around the world in 2024 that coincides with the Feb. 9 release of Boogie’s new single, P@E, which features Mariah the Scientist.

Caribbean rapper Byron Messia, who lives in Saint Kitts and Nevis but was born in Jamaica, is the opening act.

Man charged in 2007 slaying

A B.C. man and former Manitoban has been charged in the 2007 killing of Crystal Saunders, 24.
Saunders, an Indigenous woman, was last seen in the West End of Winnipeg on April 18, 2007, and her body was found the next day near St. Ambroise, RCMP said.
Kevin Charles Queau, 42, of Vancouver, has been charged with second-degree murder.
Police said DNA was found on the victim’s remains, and a suspect match was found in a national database years after the slaying. Investigators spent years working to gain enough evidence to arrest and charge a suspect, RCMP said.

Man charged with taking mugger’s gun

A man charged with multiple crimes is accused of taking a gun a mugger dropped during an unrelated robbery.

Winnipeg police said a 35-year-old man was robbed by a man brandishing a knife and a firearm in the 800 block of Main Street at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The suspect stabbed the victim in the upper body and fled on foot, dropping the gun.

The Winnipeg Police Service said a man was seen picking up the dropped gun and getting into a taxi. Officers tracked the taxi to the 600 block of Magnus Avenue. They recovered a Glock 19 handgun and a magazine containing a .22-calibre round.

A 26-year-old Winnipeg man is charged with multiple firearms-related offences. Three other people were arrested but released without being charged.

The major crimes unit is investigating the robbery and asking anyone with information about it to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS). No one has been arrested in that incident.

Jets lose Declan Chisholm to rival Wild

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Declan Chisholm has a new hockey home.

The 24-year-old was claimed on Monday by the Minnesota Wild, one day after being placed on waivers by the club that drafted him 150th-overall in 2018

Chisholm has played just two NHL games this season, recording one assist with Winnipeg, and four for his professional career. He has appeared in 146 games with the Manitoba Moose.

The Jets also lost forward Jansen Harkins to waivers earlier this season, with the Pittsburgh Penguins picking him up, and forward Mikey Eyssimont (San Jose Sharks) and defenceman Johnny Kovacevic (Montreal Canadiens) last year.

The loss of Chisholm leaves Winnipeg with 22 active players on the roster, along with forwards Mark Scheifele and David Gustafsson on injured reserve. They are both expected to be activated before the Jets return to action next Tuesday.

Pedestrian hit on Pembina Highway

Police say a woman suffered serious injuries after she ran in front of a vehicle on Pembina Highway late Friday night.
The incident happened in the 1400 block of Pembina, in the southbound lanes between Clarence and Boston avenues, at 11:30 p.m.
Officers provided the victim with emergency medical care before an ambulance arrived, the Winnipeg Police Service said.
The 23-year-old woman was transported to hospital in critical condition and was in guarded condition Monday morning.
The driver of the vehicle is 58 years old, the WPS said.
The WPS traffic division is asking anyone with information about the collision, or video, to call 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Bombers sign centre Chris Kolankowski

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have inked centre Chris Kolankowski to a two-year extension, the CFL club announced Monday.

Kolankowski was set to become a free agent on Feb 13, but with his new deal will remain in blue and gold through the 2025 season. The 31-year-old has been with the Bombers since 2020, but only became a starter in 2022 after an injury to Michael Couture, playing in every game in 2023.

The Bombers have no locked up three of their five starting O-lineman from last season, with left guard Patrick Neufeld and left tackle Stanley Bryant also inking extensions over the off-season. That leaves right Jermarcus Hardrick and guard Geoff Gray still in need of a contract.

Suspect sought in stabbings

No arrests have been made after a man and a woman were stabbed on Selkirk Avenue early Friday.
A 27-year-old man and 28-year-old woman were found suffering from upper-body stab wounds in the 600 block of Selkirk at about 3:30 a.m.
Police officers used chest seals on both people. The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition, while the woman went in stable condition.
An adult male suspect fled before officers arrived, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.
No arrests have been made. The WPS major crimes unit is asking anyone with information about the incident to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).

Irish star Hozier to play downtown arena Aug. 20

Hozier, the Irish singer-songwriter who blends folk, rock, soul and blues, will play the Canada Life Centre on Aug. 20.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 2 at noon at livenation.com and ticketmaster.ca. Prices were not announced.

Hozier, born Andrew John Hozier-Byrne in County Wicklow, Ireland, broke into the musical mainstream in 2013 with the Grammy-nominated song Take Me to Church, which has been streamed more than two billion times on Spotify, placing it among the top-40 most played songs in the service’s history. Winter roads open after weather delay

The province’s winter road system has opened, but mild weather delayed it about two weeks later than usual.

The road system, which covers 2,375 kilometres over muskeg, lakes, rivers and streams, allows the transport of larger goods in more than 2,500 truckloads to communities normally only accessible by plane.

Twenty-two communities, and 30,000 residents, are connected to the temporary road system normally open from mid-January to mid-March.

RCMP to announce break in ‘historical homicide investigation’

Mounties will announce “a major advancement in a historical homicide investigation” at a news conference Monday afternoon.

RCMP did not specify which homicide case they were referring to. The family of the victim will be there, Mounties said.

The news conference will contain details that might “be disturbing to members of the media and the public, particularly those directly impacted by matters involving missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, two-spirit and gender-diverse people,” the advisory states.
