Jets lose 3-2 in overtime to Rangers

Mika Zibanejad scored with 25 seconds left in overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider also scored for the visitors, who improve to 7-2-0 on the year.

David Gustafsson and Nikolaj Ehlers had the goals for Winnipeg, who are now 4-3-2 and have recorded points in five straight games (3-0-2).

The Jets now hit the road for three straight games starting Thursday night in Vegas.

Jets, Rangers tied 1-1 after two periods

The Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers are tied 1-1 through two periods at Canada Life Centre.

Artemi Panarin and David Gustafsson traded goals in the opening frame, and neither team could find the back of the net in the second stanza.

Shots are 20-19 for Winnipeg through 20 minutes.

Highway 75 closed

Icy conditions caused the closure of Highway 75 from Winnipeg to Morris Monday night.

The provincial government issued the closure notice just before 8 p.m. Monday.

Spence St. garage fire under investigation

A West Broadway garage fire is under investigation by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which happened at about 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in a detached garage in the 600 block of Spence Street. Flames were spreading to an adjacent house and second garage when firefighter crews arrived. The fire was declared under control at 5:21 p.m. All residents had gotten out safely before crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates were not available.

Jets, Rangers tied 1-1 after first period

The Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers have traded early goals at Canada Life Centre.

Artemi Panarin’s tap-in goal late in the first period — courtesy of a Jacob Trouba pass — gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

But David Gustafsson replied with 28 seconds left in the opening frame following a nice feed by Cole Perfetti. His second of the young season made it 1-1.

Shots were 11-10 for the Rangers in the opening frame.

MPI workers reject offer

MPI’s strike continues after workers “overwhelmingly” rejected an offer from their employer Monday.

Voting ended at 6 p.m. on the latest employer offer.  The Manitoba Government Employees’ Union had previously described the offer as disappointing. It included a 12.2 per cent wage increase over four years. MPI workers have been on strike since Aug. 28.

More mandate letters released for new cabinet ministers

Eight more ministerial mandate letters have been publicly released as part of the NDP government’s marching orders for its new cabinet ministers. The mandate letters were posted online.

They set out the priorities for: Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn; Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare; Indigenous Economic Development Minister Ian Bushie;
Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources Minister Jamie Moses; Transportation and Infrastructure Minister and Consumer Protection and Government Services Minister Lisa Naylor; Finance Minister Adrien Sala, minister responsible for Manitoba Hydro, minister responsible for Public Utilities Board, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Service;
Advanced Education and Training Minister Renée Cable; and Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Glen Simard, minister responsible for francophone affairs, minister responsible for Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation.

The remaining mandate letters are expected to be posted online later this week, the government stated in a news release.

The portfolios of justice (minister Matt Wiebe) and Housing, Addictions and Homelessness (minister Bernadette Smith) are still outstanding.

Pedestrian dies two weeks after crash

A woman has died two weeks after she was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street in Portage la Prairie.

The collision happened on 3rd Street Northeast at about 7:50 p.m. on Oct. 6. The woman, 57, died of her injuries in hospital on Oct. 21.

RCMP said a vehicle being driven by an 18-year-old man from Sidney was heading north when it struck the woman. The driver and two witnesses stopped and helped the victim until police and emergency crews arrived.

The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition and later transferred to Winnipeg.

RCMP are investigating the fatal collision.

Missing teen last seen in Portage la Prairie found safe

A missing 15-year-old girl who had last been seen in the Oak Bay area of Portage la Prairie early Sunday has been found.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service announced shortly after noon on Monday that Amber Redwood had been “safely located.”

The MFNPS had asked for the public’s help in finding Amber on Sunday night.

Garage fire spreads to St. Boniface home

9:01 AM

Crews extinguished a fire in a garage that spread to an attached home in St. Boniface late Sunday night.

Fire crews were sent to the home on Promenade Des Intrepides at 10:18 p.m.

Firefighters tried dousing the blaze from inside the house but had to exit and use an aerial ladder.

The blaze was declared under control at 11:59 p.m.

“The house sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Monday morning.

Everyone inside the home got out before crews arrived at the scene. No one was hurt, the WFPS said.

Firefighters found two cats in the home and took them to safety.
