Occupants evacuated from Main Street hotel

Firefighters used a ladder truck to evacuate residents of a Main Street hotel after the building caught fire Monday.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were sent to a hotel on the 700 block of Main Street at 4:17 p.m. Monday.

They found smoke inside the building when they arrived. The fire was deemed under control at 4:32 p.m.

Occupants of the hotel were able to go back inside after the blaze was out. No injuries were reported.

No damage estimate was available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters put out grass fire at park

A grass fire the size of a football field kept firefighters busy at a Winnipeg park Monday.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were sent to Kilcona Park, off Lagimodiere Boulevard, around 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters attacked the brush fire using specialized woodland fire equipment.

The fire was out in 20 minutes and no injuries were reported.

Burton Cummings to play Club Regent

Club Regent Event Centre is capping off 2024 with back-to-back Burton Cummings shows.

It was announced Monday, The Guess Who founder and lead singer will be performing solo shows with his band on Dec. 30 and 31. Tickets start at $84.

The Transcona concert venue is gearing up for a busy last week of the year. Also on the docket is Canadian classic rock group Toque (Dec. 28) and lauded country artist Dallas Smith (Dec. 29).

Tickets for all four shows go on sale Thursday, Sept. 12 on Ticketmaster.

Killarney man killed in bridge crash

A Killarney man is dead after the pickup truck he was driving hit a bridge railing, rolled and hit an SUV.

RCMP were called about someone driving a grey pickup truck erratically on Highway 23 in the Belmont area at about 10:05 p.m. Saturday.

Officers headed to the area came across the collision scene at a bridge just east of Ninette. A police investigation determined the driver of the westbound truck lost control and hit the concrete portion of the railing, causing his vehicle to roll and collide with an eastbound SUV.

The driver of the truck, 59, was pronounced dead. The three occupants of the SUV were not hurt, RCMP said Monday.

Another man charged in abduction, sex assault

A second person has been charged after a male victim was beaten, abducted and sexually assaulted with a gun last month.

Jashanbeersingh Gill, a 27-year-old Winnipeg man, turned himself in to police Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was later released from police custody, the  Winnipeg Police Service said Monday.

Gurpreet Vehniwal, 34, of West St. Paul, was arrested and charged last month with sexual assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, kidnapping, assault with a weapon, robbery, extortion, uttering threats,  obstructing justice and two break-and-enter offences.

The WPS said Gill is facing similar charges.

A man told police he was at his home in Inkster Gardens on the evening of Aug. 13 when he was confronted by a man he knows and a second male.

The victim was beaten and abducted. The suspects drove him to an undisclosed location, where he was sexually assaulted with a firearm, he told police, adding his phone and passport were stolen.

The man was eventually released and called police on Aug. 16.

Man arrested with zip gun

A man with a homemade gun is facing charges after police said he nearly struck a cruiser with a bicycle early Sunday.

Patrolling officers saw the man riding a bike “in an unsafe manner” in the area of Alexander Avenue and Arlington Street at about 1:42 a.m. They stopped the rider after the bike nearly collided with their vehicle, the Winnipeg Police Service said Monday.

Officers learned a Brandon Police Service warrant had been issued for the man’s arrest for failing to attend court and found a loaded zip gun that takes .22-calibre ammunition on him, a news release said.

A 23-year-old Winnipeg man is facing criminal charges of possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, identity fraud (intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice) and an offence under the Highway Traffic Act. He was detained in custody.

Second man arrested after Mountie threatened in video

A second suspect has been arrested after a video showing a man with a gun threatening to kill a nearby RCMP officer was shared on social media.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP were alerted to the video on Aug. 31. Police said last week that the video, which was circulating on Facebook, showed a man with a gun looking at an RCMP officer who was on another property in Ebb and Flow First Nation. The man made direct threats about killing the officer, police said.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged at the scene, and police asked for the public’s help Tuesday in finding another man. Keith Racette, 29, has since been arrested, RCMP said Monday morning.
