Jets close out homestand with 4-2 win over Habs

The Winnipeg Jets closed out a four-game homestand Saturday night with a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Gabe Vilardi, Adam Lowry, Kyle Connor and Vlad Namestnikov scored for the home team, which improved to 22-9-1 including 2-1-1 over the past week at the downtown rink. Montreal fell to 11-16-3, with Lane Hutson and Josh Anderson scoring goals.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 of 28 shots in a winning effort.

The Jets now hit the road for two straight games starting Tuesday in San Jose.

Two arrested after shotgun blast on Boyd Avenue

Two suspects are in custody after a shotgun was fired on Boyd Avenue early Thursday.

Police were sent to the 300 block at about 12:45 a.m. and found two suspects beside a Jeep Compass in a lane behind Boyd Avenue.

An investigation determined a man went to the front of a home with a shotgun and fired it, breaking a window.

A sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun was found in the vehicle, and police say it had one spent round of ammunition and eight other shells.

A 31-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman have been charged. They were detained in custody.

Two hospitalized after fire on Riverside Drive

Two people were taken to hospital in critical condition after a house fire on Riverside Drive late Friday.

Crews were sent to the two-storey home on the first 100 block of Riverside shortly before 11 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 1:18 a.m. Saturday.

The cause is under investigation.

Cabbie carjacked, two taxis damaged

A 34-year-old man is facing various charges after a dispute with a taxi driver Friday.

Police were sent to the 1400 block of Notre Dame Avenue at about 2 a.m after a passenger armed himself with the vehicle’s car jack.

The man allegedly smashed a side window and forcibly removed the cabbie after the driver pulled over near St. James Street and Wellington Avenue to call police and a fellow cabbie.

As the victim fled to the second taxi, the passenger struck that vehicle with the tool, damaging the trunk, police said.

The passenger drove off in the first cab until he lost control and hit a snowbank on the 1400 block of St. James Street.

The man is facing single counts of robbery and theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of mischief, including one over $5,000. He was released from custody on an undertaking.

Man charged after allegedly ramming police cruiser

A 24-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer after he allegedly rammed a police cruiser with a stolen vehicle.

The Winnipeg Police Service said officers saw the vehicle near Sargent Avenue and Simcoe Street at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday. The 2023 Nissan Qashqai had been reported stolen from the 100 block of Gerard Street on Dec. 8.

Police followed the vehicle into a back lane between Home and Arlington streets. The Qashqai rammed the police vehicle when officers turned into the lane to stop the vehicle, the WPS said in a news release.

The Qashqai became stuck in a snowbank near Home Street and Ellice Avenue.

The man is also facing a charge of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He was detained in custody.

The passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was released without being charged.
