Jets beat Avalanche 6-2

The Winnipeg Jets have started off a four-game homestand on a winning note.

A 6-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche improves their record to 18-9-2.

Gabe Vilardi scored twice, while Alex Iafallo, Nino Niederreiter, Vlad Namestnikov and Nikolaj Ehlers had the other tallies.

Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves.

The Jets return to action on Monday night when they host the Montreal Canadiens.

Female dies in downtown stabbing

A female youth has died after being stabbed Friday afternoon in downtown Winnipeg.

At around 1 p.m. Friday, Winnipeg police responded to the 200 block of Graham Avenue after a report a female had been stabbed, police said Saturday.

Officers provided emergency medical care to the victim at the scene. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery, but she later died of her injuries, police said.

The homicide unit is investigating and no arrest has been made.

Man arrested after Corydon Avenue carjacking

A 34-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing charges after a violent carjacking Thursday night.

A 23-year-old man was exiting his vehicle in the 500 block of Corydon Avenue around 8:36 p.m. when he was approached by a man with a handgun, according to a police release issued Saturday.

A struggle ensued and the handgun was discharged, which struck the vehicle, Winnipeg police say. The suspect fled in the vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle around 12:25 a.m. Friday near the 700 block of Watt Street and arrested the suspect. During the arrest police seized a folding knife and 37 grams of cocaine, however the handgun was not found.

The suspect was detained in custody.
