Hellebuyck leads Jets past Blackhawks

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 20 shots to backstop the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in NHL action before 14,189 fans at Canada Life Centre Saturday afternoon.
Morgan Barron, Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti scored for the winners.
Rookie superstar Connor Bedard had the lone goal for the Blackhawks. Arvid Soderblom made 25 stops in the Chicago net.
The Guess Who’s original lead singer dies

The original lead of iconic Winnipeg rock band The Guess Who has died.
Chad Allan, who formed the group and was lead vocalist on the hit 1965 single Shakin’ All Over when the band was still known as Chad Allan and the Expressions, was 80 when he died on Nov. 21.
In an obituary, his family described Allan as “part of the fabric of… Canadian music history” for his role in the band. He suffered a stroke in 2017.
Allan left The Guess Who to attend college in 1966. The band went on to record the album American Woman in 1970, which hit No. 1 on Canadian music charts, among other chart toppers in Canada and the U.S.
CPKC holiday train to make Winnipeg stop tonight

The Canadian Pacific holiday train will make a stop in Winnipeg tonight.
The rail company, recently renamed CPKC after it purchased Kansas City Southern Railway, says its annual festive season tour will stop at Molson Street and Panet Road at 9:15 p.m.
The tour stop, meant to raise money and gather food for food banks, will see Canadian band Anyway Gang play tunes from a stage on a brightly decorated train until 9:45 p.m.
The railway will also make a food bank donation at the stop.
Manitoba casino workers set stage for strike

Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries casino workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of striking if a deal with their employer isn’t reached soon.
Unifor Local 144, which represents more than 750 workers at McPhillips Station, Club Regent and the Shark Club casinos, said 98 per cent of its members voted to strike if a contract isn’t inked this month.
The employees include dealers, cashiers, slot attendants, security, customer service and grounds employees as well as skilled trade workers.
The union local has been without a collective agreement since June 2022. The union said on Saturday that members’ wages have only gone up 1.75 per cent in six years.
The union said it will begin job action just after midnight on Dec. 23 if its members don’t have a new contract.
