Winnipeg police have arrested at least one person after an “armed-and-barricaded” standoff in an apartment suite on College Avenue near Main Street early Saturday.

“We’re still on scene, we’re still investigating,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen shortly before noon on Saturday. The spokesman had limited information he could immediately provide, but said the standoff had come to an end with the arrest.

He said police were called to an apartment block at Charles Street and College Avenue around 3 a.m., leading to an armed standoff. Michalyshen said a number of people were inside the suite, but one of them made the situation “volatile.”

Police cruisers and the service’s armoured vehicle sat near the apartment throughout the morning.

Custodians at Seine River School Division to strike Monday

10:37 AM

Custodians at a rural school division plan to strike on Monday.

The 47 custodial staff of Seine River School Division, which is headquartered in Lorette southeast of Winnipeg, have been working without a contract since July 2021, said the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union, which represents them.

The staffers are aiming to get wage increases over what the division is currently offering. The union said the division’s offer is an increase of 9.8 per cent over four year, which the staff rejected Dec. 9. The custodians, who are members of local 143, voted to strike on Dec. 23.

The division and union sat down again this past week, but the division did not change the offer, according to MGEU.

OTTAWA — A team of young women from Manitoba will go for gold this afternoon at the Canadian U18 curling championships.

Shaela Hayward’s foursome from Carman will meet the Jolianne Fortin team from Quebec in the final, set for 3:30 p.m.

Hayward, with third Keira Krahn, second India Young and lead Rylie Cox, earned a spot in the national final after posting a 4-2 victory over Nova Scotia’s Rebecca Regan on Friday night.

The team had a solid run at the recent Manitoba women’s championship in Morden, finishing with a 3-2 record in the preliminary round to narrowly miss advancing to the championship round.

They will also compete at the Manitoba U21 playdowns later this month.
