Paredes hits OT field goal as Stamps beat Bombers

Rene Paredes hit a 52-yard field goal  in overtime to lift the Calgary Stampeders to a 22-19 triumph over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers in CFL action at McMahon Stadium Saturday night.

Late in the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Chris Streveler led Winnipeg on eight-play, 77-yard drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass to Drew Wolitarsky to tie the game 19-19 with 37 seconds left.

Marken Michel scored Calgary’s only touchdown on a six-yard reception in the second half.

The Bombers, who fell to 0-4, struggled on offence before starting quarterback Zach Collaros left the game at halftime with an injury.

Winnipeg’s Sergio Castillo was good on all four of his field goal attempts, hitting from 60, 26, 37 and 36 yards.

Earlier, Paredes was good on field goal attempts of  47 and 26 yards. Cody Grace had a pair of punt singles for the winners, who improved to 2-1.

Jets add size at centre with late draft pick

The Winnipeg Jets selected 6-foot-6 forward Kieron Walton 187th overall in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, Saturday.

Walton, 18, had 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in 65 games with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL last season. During his two seasons with Sudbury, the Toronto native tallied 56 points in 111 games.

Jets draft two forwards mid-round

The Winnipeg Jets have drafted a pair of forwards in the middle rounds of the 2024 NHL Draft.

The Jets selected Kevin He 109th overall in the fourth round and Markus Loponen 155th overall in the fifth round, Saturday.

He, 18, racked up 53 points (31G, 22A) in 64 games with the OHL’s Niagara IceDogs last season and at 109th overall, becomes the highest drafted China-born player ever in the NHL.

Loponen, 18, appeared in 45 games, tallying 54 points (25G, 29A) with Kärpät U20 of the U20 SM-sarja league where he was selected the Rookie of the Year and led the league with a plus-40 rating. Internationally, he also played for Finland at the 2024 U18 World Championship, netting an assist in five games.

Jets draft defenceman

The Winnipeg Jets selected defenceman Alfons Freij 37th overall in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, Saturday.

Freij, 18, spent most of last season with the Växjö Lakers in the J20 Nationell league in Sweden where he recorded 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points in 40 games.

He also played internationally for Sweden at last year’s U18 World Championships where he registered six points (2G, 4A) in seven games and helped Sweden win a gold medal.

19-year-old arrested after knife incident on city bus

Winnipeg police say a 19-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly smashed city transit bus windows with a “large knife” early Saturday morning.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said a 16-year-old female and a 19-year-old man were arguing on a bus at 1 a.m. Saturday. When the two disembarked, the male tried to re-enter but was denied. He then allegedly pulled out a large knife and proceeded to damage multiple bus windows.

No one was injured.

Police attended the scene in the area of Grassie and Lagimodiere Boulevards and arrested the 19-year-old.

The man was later released from custody. He is facing charges of possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000. The female was detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act.

Police make arrest after Sunday stabbing

A 20-year-old Winnipeg man is under arrest after a man was assaulted last Sunday.

In a release Saturday, police said they were called to the 100 block of Ritchie Street at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 23 where they found a 29-year-old man suffering from serious stab wounds.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

Winnipeg police major crimes unit took over the investigation and determined the victim and a friend got into a dispute over drugs and money. Police say the friend then pulled a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times. Multiple suspects fled the scene.

A 20-year-old man was arrested Tuesday without incident when police located him as a passenger in a vehicle in the area of McPhillips Street and Logan Avenue. He was allegedly in possession of upwards of $3,000 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine. Police charged him with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and failing to comply with a condition of a release order.

Police are not looking for additional suspects.
