Jets lose 3-2 to Senators

Brady Tkachuk’s power play goal with 1:45 left in regulation was the difference as the Ottawa Senators beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in NHL action at Canada Life Centre Saturday night.

It’s Winnipeg’s sixth straight loss (0-5-1).

Boris Katchouk and Ridly Greig also scored for the visitors. Nikolaj Ehlers and Mark Scheifele had the Winnipeg goals.

The Jets are now 44-24-6 on the season. They return to action on Monday night when they host the Los Angeles Kings.

Intersection reopens following train-pedestrian collision

The intersection of Munroe Avenue and Panet Road has reopened after a collision involving a train and a 34-year-old woman.

Const. Claude Chancy says she was transported to hospital in unstable condition where she remains.

Chancy says it is “unknown why and how she got into the path of the train.”

Winnipeg police asked motorists to avoid the area shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday on X.

Woman last seen in Osborne Village safely located

Winnipeg police say a missing 42-year-old woman has been safely located.

Miriam Campbell was last seen in the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street on March 24.

Mother charged following 2022 death of one-year-old son

Winnipeg police have charged the 33-year-old mother of a child who died suddenly on Dec. 29, 2022.

Police say the mother of one-year-old Romeo Stewart called 911 after her son became unresponsive. When crews arrived at the residence on the 300 block of Sherbrook Street, the toddler was sent to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

Through autopsy and toxicology reports, police say Stewart’s death was a result of high levels of fentanyl and carfentanil intoxication. Investigators say Romeo was exposed to these substances at the residence.

Friday, police charged the mother with failing to provide the necessaries of life. She was released via an undertaking.

Two arrested after Ness Avenue robbery

A man and woman from Winnipeg are facing charges after allegedly robbing gas bar employees at knifepoint Thursday morning.

Winnipeg police responded to the 1600 block of Ness Avenue at 7:15 a.m. after money and tobacco products were stolen from the business.

The two employees were not injured.

Police say both suspects were arrested at a residence on the 500 block of Richmond Street Friday. The stolen property and large knife believed to have been used in the robbery were recovered.

A 52-year-old man and 50-year-old woman are facing charges. They were released on an undertaking.

No injuries in Alexander Avenue house fire

No injuries were reported after a Friday afternoon house fire on Alexander Avenue.

The fire was accidentally caused by improper disposal of smoking materials, according to a preliminary investigation by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. Firefighters received reports of the fire at 3:42 p.m. Friday and rescued multiple cats from the two-storey home on the 500 block of Alexander Ave. Crews had the fire under control by 4:30 p.m. and most of the damage was contained to the room where the fire started.

Displaced residents of the building were receiving assistance from the city’s emergency social services team.

Crews respond to fires on Keewatin St., Selkirk Ave.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the 400 block of Keewatin Street Friday for reports of a fire spreading from a truck trailer to a single-storey commercial building.

When crews arrived shortly after 6:16 a.m., the trailer was fully involved in fire and heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building.

The fire was declared under control at 10:38 a.m.

Shortly before midnight Friday, crews also attended a fire in a two-storey, mixed-use building on the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Once on scene, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. The fire was declared under control at 1:09 a.m. Friday.

Both fires remain under investigation.
