Lions claw to within five points of Bombers

It’s shaping up to be quite a finish in the CFL’s Western Final in Winnipeg.

The B.C. Lions posted the only score of the third quarter, a 43-yard field goal by Sean Whyte, to cut the Blue Bombers’ lead to 18-13 in front of a sold-out crowd of 32,343 at IG Field.

The Bombers put together a drive midway through the quarter but came up empty as Sergio Castillo’s 34-yard field goal clanked off the right post.

Winnipeg led 7-3 after the opening quarter and 18-10 at halftime.

Bombers’ linebacker Adam Bighill went down with an injury in the second quarter and did not return.

Tonight’s winner meets the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup championship game next Sunday in Hamilton.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers gave up a long-bomb touchdown on the final play of the second quarter but lead the B.C. Lions 18-10 in the CFL’s Western Final tonight at IG Field.

B.C. quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., found receiver Justin McInnis from 45 yards out with no time left on the clock.

Late in the quarter, Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill suffered an injury to his right leg while he was rushing Adams and needed to be helped off the field

The Bombers led 7-3 after the first quarter on a Brady Oliveira eight-yard run. Oliveira has 14 carries for 101 yards through 30 minutes.

In the second, Jackson Jeffcoat’s monster sack on Adams Jr., forced a deep punt by B.C., however, Bombers’ defensive back Nick Hallett blocked it, recovered the ball and barged into the end zone for a Winnipeg major and a 15-3 cushion at 5:21.

Sergio Castillo missed a 46-yard field goal but later made one from 29 yards out at 9:36 on a drive set up by a Kyrie Wilson interception.

Bombers grab 7-3 lead on Lions

Running back Brady Oliveira has staked the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 7-3 lead after the opening quarter of the CFL’s Western final this evening at IG Field.

Oliveira’s bullish eight-yard run through heavy traffic vaulted the hosts into the lead at 10:31, the hosts’ 10th play of a 70-yard drive. Eight of those plays were runs by Oliveira, who picked up 59 yards on the ground during Winnipeg’s first possession. He also hauled in an 11-yard pass from quarterback Zach Collaros.

B.C. scored first on a 48-yard field goal by Sean Whyte at 3:33.

Oliveira finished the quarter with 10 carries for 80 yards.

The Bombers finished 14-4 during the CFL regular season to earn a bye to the division final, while the Lions (12-6) needed to get past the Calgary Stampeders in a semifinal battle last weekend.

Today’s survivor meets the Montreal Alouettes in the 11oth Grey Cup in Hamilton on Sunday, Nov. 19. The Als posted a major upset in the East Division Final, dumping the heavily favoured Argonauts 38-17 in Toronto earlier today.

Kurz team loses Canadian mixed curling final

The Manitoba team skipped by Kyle Kurz came up just short at the Canadian mixed curling championship in Swift Current, Sask., on Saturday afternoon.

The squad fell 6-4 to Shaun Meacham of the host city in the championship final.

Kurz, with third Beth Peterson, second Ian McMillan and lead Melissa Kurz, had won nine consecutive games before losing to Saskatchewan in a final championship-pool game Friday night but easily made the playoffs.

The Manitobans bounced back to defeat Scott McDonald of Ontario 6-5 in a Saturday morning semi-final game to set up the rematch with Saskatchewan.

Kurz evened the score 4-4 in the seventh end of the championship battle but surrendered a decisive deuce in the eighth.

Stars lead Jets 3-1

Special teams have been a major factor as the Winnipeg Jets trail the Dallas Stars 3-1 after two periods of play in NHL action at Canada Life Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams traded even-strength goals in the second period, but the Stars got a shorthanded goal from Wyatt Johnston and a power-play marker from Matt Duchene one second before a minor penalty to Brenden Dillon expired to build a two-goal cushion.

Johnston has a goal and an assist for the Stars, while Cole Perfetti has the lone goal for the Jets, extending his point streak to six games.

Perfetti is up to nine points during his past nine games to sit fourth in team scoring.

Thomas Harley has the other goal for the Stars, who entered Saturday in top spot in the Central Division standings, one point ahead of the Jets and the Colorado Avalanche.

Making his 11th start of the season, Connor Hellebuyck has 19 saves for the Jets while Stars backup Scott Wedgewood has turned aside 16 of 17 shots he’s faced.

Fire crews douse blaze; electrical malfunction suspected

Winnipeg firefighters doused a blaze in a home on Manitoba Avenue late Friday evening that was likely caused by an electrical malfunction.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews raced to the reported blaze in a single-family, one-and-a-half-storey house on the 1300 block of Manitoba Avenue between Shaughnessy and McNichol streets at about 8:44 p.m.

The WFPS says firefighters found smoke coming from the house, but all the occupants had gotten out safely on their own.

Crews went inside and got the flames under control by about 9:47 p.m.

Garden Hill man found dead

A search-and-rescue team has found the body of a 42-year-old Garden Hill First Nation man who went missing after taking his boat to an island to gather firewood.

The Island Lake RCMP detachment was alerted about Harold Christopher Taylor’s disappearance on Nov. 5, after he went to Wass Island on Island Lake to get wood on Nov. 1.

Mounties said previously that community members went to the island and surrounding areas when Taylor did not return to Garden Hill. They found found his boat floating near the shore of another island, RCMP said.

The local search-and-rescue team located his body near the island at about 3:15 p.m. on Friday, RCMP said, who added that an autopsy has been scheduled.

Jets and Stars are tied 0-0

The Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars are still looking for the first goal of the game in this Central Division slugfest.

Separated by just one point in the standings, the second-place Jets managed 10 shots on goal compared to nine for the Stars, who lead the Central with 17 points after advancing to the Western Conference final last season.

Connor Hellebuyck turned aside nine shots as he makes his 11th start of the season, while Stars backup Scott Wedgewood made 10 saves for the visitors.

Police investigate after injured man found on Arlington dies

Police are investigating after a man died early Saturday morning.

On Nov. 11, around 2 a.m., police responded to a report of an injured male lying on a sidewalk in the 1100 block of Arlington Street.

Officers provided the adult victim with emergency medical care with the application of a chest seal and CPR. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced deceased.

The homicide unit is investigating.

Police kept a large section of Logan Avenue between Arlington and Dorothy streets blocked off behind yellow crime scene tape until mid-afternoon Saturday.

Two police forensic identification vehicles sat idle in the parking lot of adjacent strip club and bar Lipstixx Experience.

Behind the tape on Logan Avenue, a discarded latex glove sat in the road, but little other indication of the early morning emergency scene remained.

Anyone with video or information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS.

The Winnipeg Police Service will hold its auction for unclaimed goods online, Nov. 23-30.
