Bombers defeat Elks 45-25

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Edmonton Elks 45-25 at IG Field Saturday night.

Running back Brady Oliveira and receiver Rasheed Bailey led the way with two touchdowns apiece, with Greg McCrae and Adam Bighill also finding the end zone. Sergio Castillo rounded out the scoring with a 24-yard field goal.

The Elks answered back with a pair of touchdowns from backup quarterback Taylor Cornelius, plus a return TD from Deontez Alexander and a 43-yard field goal from Dean Faithfull.

The Bombers improved to 13-4, while the Elks dropped to 4-14.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lead the Edmonton Elks 24-17 at halftime at IG Field.

The Bombers took a quick 14-0 edge before the game was six minutes old, owing to a three-yard rushing touchdown by Brady Oliveira and a fumble recovery returned 26 yards by Adam Bighill for another score. The Elks answered back with a one-yard TD by backup QB Taylor Cornelius and a 43-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 game after the opening frame.

Winnipeg added 10 more points in the second quarter, with Sergio Castillo connecting on a 24-yard field goal and another TD by Oliveira, who recorded his ninth rushing score and 13th TD of the season. The Elks answered back with another one-yard TD by Cornelius to cut the Bombers lead to 24-17.

It’s the third and final game between the two West Division clubs, with the Bombers winning both previous matches.

More than 1,000 march through downtown in support of Palestine

A rally in support of Palestine gathered more than 1,000 Manitobans who marched through downtown Saturday afternoon.

Participants at Memorial Park carried signs calling for ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and demanded the provincial and federal government provide additional aid to the thousands who have been impacted by the violence.

The march was briefly derailed by around a dozen counter-protesters, who stood at the Legislature. Police who were monitoring the situation intervened and the opposing parties did not clash.

Police blocked off Portage and Main from noon to 3 p.m.

IIU investigating after wanted man injured during arrest

A 38-year-old man who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant is in stable condition after allegedly jumping from a second-floor window during his arrest, police say.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, police arrived to a community correctional facility in the 1000 block of Main Street to apprehend the man.

After the man made a phone call to a family member at the facility, police say he jumped from his room’s second-floor window. He was taken to the hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating the incident.

Three-hour stand-off with police after man barricades himself in home with knife

There were no injuries after a man barricaded himself in a home with a knife Friday night.

Police were called to the Valley Gardens home on a domestic dispute report at around 8:20 p.m. Three occupants had left the home before police arrived, but a 36-year-old man retreated into the home with a knife.

After a three-hour response that included the Winnipeg Police Service’s crisis negotiation unit, the man was sent to hospital in stable condition, where he was medically cleared. The three people who had left the home were not injured.

The suspect has been charged with four counts of disobeying order of the court, assault, and uttering threats. The WPS is not naming him to protect the family’s identity.

Crews respond to fire in St. Matthews neighbourhood

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the 200 block of Toronto Street Saturday morning for reports of a fire.

When crews arrived to the vacant, single-storey house around 5:22 a.m., they found smoke and launched an offensive attack. The fire was under control shortly after 6 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.

Power restored at the Forks

A power outage at The Forks that closed shops and restaurants Saturday morning has been resolved.

Manitoba Hydro said on X (formerly known as Twitter) power was restored to the area as of 11:35 a.m.

Bombers clinch West Division

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have clinched the West Division.

A 41-16 B.C. Lions loss Friday night to the Calgary Stampeders sealed the deal. The defeat dropped the Lions to 12-6, making it impossible to catch the Bombers. Winnipeg heads into Saturday’s home game versus the Edmonton Elks with a 12-4 record, but own the season series and first tiebreaker against B.C.

The Bombers have now clinched the West in three consecutive years, marking the first time the CFL club has achieved that goal since 1962. By winning the division, the Bombers will host the Western Final on Nov. 11.
