Jets lose 4-3 in shootout to Habs

The Winnipeg Jets lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

Nick Suzuki scored the only shootout goal to settle it.

Winnipeg is now 3-0-1 in its last four games and 4-3-1 overall on the season. Montreal improves to 5-2-1.

Montreal’s Joel Armia tallied early in the third period to force overtime.

Montreal’s Allen stopped 42 of 45 shots, plus three more in the shootout. Winnipeg’s Laurent Brossoit made 26 saves in regulation and overtime.

Jets up 3-2 after second

The Winnipeg Jets scored goals 20 seconds apart in the opening minute of the second period to take the lead over the Montreal Canadiens.

After the teams traded goals in the first period, Adam Lowry (with his second of the game) and Nino Niederreiter gave the Jets a two-goal cushion before Sean Monahan responded with a power-play marker to cut the Canadiens deficit to 3-2.

The Jets hold a wide edge in shots on goal (30-17) but Canadiens goalie Jake Allen continues to keep his team within striking distance.

Jets, Habs tied 1-1 after first

The Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens are tied 1-1 in NHL action after the first period Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
Jets captain Adam Lowry scored on a penalty shot to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, but Montreal’s Justin Barron replied on the ensuing shift, just 37 seconds later, to tie the score.
The Jets held a wide edge in shots on goal (19-6), but Canadiens goalie Jake Allen turned aside 18 of 19 shots he faced to keep the score even.

Hundreds gather in downtown Winnipeg, call for ceasefire in Gaza

Several hundred people gathered in downtown Winnipeg on Saturday to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel intensified its bombardment of the 41-kilometre strip and as the death toll mounts.

Participants gathered at Memorial Park, across from the Legislature, and were set to march to the intersection of Portage and Main. Some carried large Palestinian flags, while others wore the distinct black and white checkered keffiyeh scarf, a symbol of Palestinian solidarity. Marchers carried signs with messages like “Free Palestine,” “Ceasefire Now” and “Trudeau, there is blood on your hands.”

The march comes three weeks after Hamas launched its deadly attack on Israel.

Man arrested after threats uttered at Thompson hospital

A 44-year-old man from Thompson has been arrested after allegedly uttering threats at the Thompson General Hospital Oct. 20.

Around 8 p.m. last Friday Thompson RCMP say the man entered the hospital, uttered threats, and told those in the waiting room he would return to with a firearm.

The suspect then took out his phone and took photos of those in the waiting room before leaving, say RCMP.

The man was located at a residence in Thompson and taken into custody. No firearms were located.
