Two in critical condition, one unstable, after early morning fire in north Winnipeg

9:55 AM

Two people were sent to the hospital in critical and one in unstable condition after an early morning fire in North Winnipeg on Saturday. Firefighters were called to extinguish a blazing fire in the St. Johns neighbourhood at 2:49 a.m.

A three-story mixed-use building located in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue had heavy smoke and flames coming out from it when they arrived.

Firefighters initially fought the flames from inside, but as the situation worsened, they withdrew and used an aerial ladder to extinguish the fire. A drone was also sent up to help find hot spots.

Two people were rescued from the building. Paramedics treated several others for injuries.

A nearby building was also evacuated as a precaution, and a Winnipeg Transit bus provided shelter.

Emergency Social Services assisted displaced residents in finding temporary housing, while Manitoba Hydro shut off gas and power to several buildings, leaving some without electricity on Saturday morning.

Crews will continue their work throughout the morning. Southbound Main Street (between Inkster Boulevard and Cathedral Avenue) and Atlantic Avenue (between Main Street and Charles Street) remain closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
