MVP Kirk leads Buckeyes to NCAA title

Goaltender Raygan Kirk of Ste. Anne made 27 saves to backstop the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 1-0 triumph over the Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four final in Durham, N.H., Sunday afternoon.

The 23-year-old Kirk, named tournament MVP, was a playing her final game of college hockey as a fifth-year senior.

Jets’ slide continues against Ovechkin, Capitals

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Alex Ovechkin scores his 25th and 26th goals of the season to spark Washington’s third-period surge and an eventual 3-0 Capitals’ triumph over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets (44-22-5) have posted three consecutive defeats to end a five-game road trip after starting out with a couple of wins. Winnipeg hosts the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

The clubs were tied 0-0 after 40 minutes. John Carlson scored a power-play goal just 1:21 into the final frame. Ovechkin beefed up the lead for the hosts at 3:36 and then added his second of the afternoon at 12:00 on a breakaway as Washington improved to (35-26-9).

Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren was sensational, particularly in the first two periods, to register a 27-save shutout, his fifth of the year. Winnipeg has been shut out six times this season.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who was pulled during a 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, wasn’t at his sharpest against the Capitals, either, stopping 19 of 22 shots.

Alleged grocery thief in police custody

City police are continuing to crack down on retail theft with an allegedly prolific offender placed in custody.

On March 21, officers engaged in an unrelated investigation recognized a man suspected of committing a series of thefts and robberies, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Sunday.

Investigators linked the man to more than two dozen incidents in which he is accused of stealing large amounts of meat from chain grocery stores across the city. In many instances, he allegedly physically assaulted security or store employees, threatening them with bear repellant spray and edged weapons, police said.

No injuries were reported due to the reported incidents, but investigators estimate the related financial loss to total more than $10,000, WPS said.

Keifer Mitchell Davis Kent, 32, is charged with seven counts of robbery, 18 counts of theft under $5,000 and three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
He remains in custody and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
