Video shows police shooting

7:50 PM

Video circulating on social media tonight shows Winnipeg police shooting an individual after officers yelled at the person to drop “the axe or the knife.”

It happened outside the Unicity shopping centre on Portage Avenue early Sunday evening. Police are set to provide more information during a news conference later tonight. A shopper who spoke to the Free Press said she didn’t see the shooting but heard what she initially thought were firecrackers while heading to her vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. The Westwood resident who asked to be identified only by her first name, Jennifer, said she then saw two officers with guns drawn while a man was collapsed on the ground.

The video shows two officers with weapons drawn and pointed at a man standing near a bus shelter. The police yell at the man to “put the axe down or the knife!” They shout at him to drop it, and when the individual takes a step toward the police, the officers are seen firing multiple shots.

“Incidents don’t happen in Westwood. It’s just not the norm, but unfortunately, our city’s crime level is skyrocketing and police have to take measures, so I support the police, there’s a lot of crime in this city and I think they’re doing as best they can,” Jennifer said.
