Video shows police shooting

Video circulating on social media tonight shows Winnipeg police shooting an individual after officers yelled at the person to drop “the axe or the knife.”

It happened outside the Unicity shopping centre on Portage Avenue early Sunday evening. Police are set to provide more information during a news conference later tonight. A shopper who spoke to the Free Press said she didn’t see the shooting but heard what she initially thought were firecrackers while heading to her vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. The Westwood resident who asked to be identified only by her first name, Jennifer, said she then saw two officers with guns drawn while a man was collapsed on the ground.

The video shows two officers with weapons drawn and pointed at a man standing near a bus shelter. The police yell at the man to “put the axe down or the knife!” They shout at him to drop it, and when the individual takes a step toward the police, the officers are seen firing multiple shots.

“Incidents don’t happen in Westwood. It’s just not the norm, but unfortunately, our city’s crime level is skyrocketing and police have to take measures, so I support the police, there’s a lot of crime in this city and I think they’re doing as best they can,” Jennifer said.

Missing teen last seen in West End

Winnipeg police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old girl, Bostyn Laronde.

Laronde was last seen on Nov. 23, 2024 at 2 p.m. in the West End area.

Laronde is described as 5-7 with a thin build, with black long hair and brown eyes.She was last seen wearing a red windbreaker, black and white sweatpants, a grey sweater and red and black Nike shoes.

The Winnipeg Police Service is concerned for Laronde’s well-being and is asking anyone with any information regarding her whereabouts to contact the Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.

Moose down Wolves 4-2

The Manitoba Moose (6-9-0-0) won 4-2 over the Chicago Wolves (5-8-1-0) on Saturday afternoon, after coming off a 5-0 loss against the Wolves two days earlier.

The Moose outshot the Wolves 10-7 in the first period, but neither team scored.

Kevin Conley opened the scoring just over three minutes into the second period, to score his first goal for the Moose and give Manitoba a 1-0 lead.

Josiah Slavin evened the score for the Wolves 76 seconds later.

Chicago’s Noel Gunler scored a power play goal with a minute left in the period to put Chicago ahead 2-1.

Brad Lambert tied the game for the Moose seven minutes into the third period. Dominic Toninato struck just 52 seconds later, to give Manitoba a 3-2 lead. Lambert secured the 4-2 win with an empty net goal, with two minutes left in the game. Kaapo Kähkönen made 25 saves for the Moose, and Dustin Tokarski made 23 stops for the Wolves.

The Moose take on the Calgary Wranglers on Nov. 29 at Canada Life Centre.
