Fire crews respond to two separate fires

8:41 PM

On Sunday at 11:29 a.m., Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey commercial building in the 1400 block of Main Street.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the building. The fire was under control at 1:40 p.m.

Later at 4:21 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 500 block of Bannatyne Avenue.

Upon arriving at the scene, crews found smoke coming from the structure. The fire was declared under control at 4:45 p.m. The building had previously been damaged by fire in April 2023 and June 2021.

In both fires, no occupants were found and no injuries were reported. The cause for both fires are under investigation.

Bargaining continues for health support workers

4:30 PM

Less than two days before health-care support workers are set to strike, their unions say they’re nowhere near reaching a deal.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, CUPE Manitoba president Gina McKay and MGEU president Kyle Ross said bargaining isn’t going well.

“We have been bargaining all weekend with the assistance of a conciliator in the hopes of reaching a fair settlement and averting a strike,” the emailed statement reads.
“Unfortunately, bargaining is not going well. We remain far from an agreement, but we will continue to bargain.”

More than 25,000 health support workers represented by CUPE Manitoba and MGEU could walk off the job Oct. 8.
