Fire crews respond to fire in 400 block of Atlantic Avenue

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of fire at a one-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Atlantic Avenue around 2:25 p.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the structure. After entering the house and putting out the fire, it was declared under control at 2:56 p.m.

Residents evacuated the house before firefighters arrived on scene. One person was assessed by paramedics, but not transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental.

Zach Collaros ruled out of Labour Day Classic second half after hit

REGINA — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without their star quarterback Zach Collaros for the second half of Sunday’s Labour Day Classic against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Collaros was on the receiving end of a heavy hit from Riders defensive lineman Miles Brown, who appeared to catch Collaros’s helmet with his shoulder. Brown was issued a roughing-the-passer penalty on the play, which occurred with just more than a minute remaining in the second quarter.

Collaros was then ruled out of the game by the team at the start of the third quarter. Chris Streveler takes over the offence, with the Bombers holding a 29-14 lead.

Winnipeg man, 43, missing from downtown since Aug. 30

A Winnipeg man, 43-year-old Jason Caldwell, has been missing from downtown since Aug. 30. Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for him and say they are concerned for his wellbeing.

Caldwell is described as 5’10” tall, with a heavy build, weighing 185 pounds. He has short black hair and a goatee, brown eyes and was wearing black framed glasses. He was last seen in downtown Winnipeg at about 7 p.m. Aug. 30 and had travel plans to go to the Reston, Man., area in the coming days, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

Police are asking anyone with information on Caldwell’s whereabouts to call the WPS Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.

Main Street robberies under investigation

A robbery and assault on Main Street over the weekend has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man, and police are still looking for additional suspects.

A victim in his 20s was punched, kicked and robbed outside of an establishment in the 400 block of Main Street at about 3 a.m. Aug. 31. He was injured but declined medical attention, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday. After the first assailant fled, and while the victim was on the ground, a second suspect kicked him and stole some of his personal belongings. Police say bystanders pointed out the second suspect to officers, and a 25-year-old man was arrested. The investigation is ongoing. Police are also still investigating another assault and robbery that happened in the same area a week earlier.

On Aug. 24, at about 1:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a man in his 20s being assaulted and robbed after he exited an establishment in the 400 block of Main Street. The victim was confronted by a group of men, one of whom was armed with a knife. At the time, he declined medical attention and provided police a vague description of three male suspects.

Gun-waving driver suspect detained

A man is accused of pointing a handgun at the occupants of another vehicle while driving along Kenaston Boulevard Saturday night.

A 32-year-old man is now charged with several firearms offences. The Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release that he was allegedly driving erratically southbound on Kenaston at about 11:30 p.m. Aug. 31 and at one point pulled up parallel to another vehicle and pointed what looked like a handgun at the driver and passenger. Those victims called police, who found the suspect vehicle parked in the 400 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway. A male was seen getting out of the vehicle and dumping something in the garbage. Police seized from the garbage an air pellet gun and took the man into custody, where he remained Sunday. His name has not been released by police.

Downtown stabbing suspect arrested; two victims hospitalized

A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with two downtown stabbings on Aug. 30. The two male victims are recovering in hospital.

The unnamed suspect was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. Aug. 30 after he swam back to the Red River bank in Point Douglas and police found him in the river. He’s accused of stabbing two people downtown Friday evening. In the first incident, he allegedly stabbed a man he knew in a park near Portage Avenue and Carlton Street at about 8 p.m. The victim, in his 50s, had to receive an emergency chest seal and was taken to hospital in critical condition. He’s since stabilized, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday. After that stabbing, the suspect fled and two individuals followed him and confronted him in the area of Garry Street and Graham Avenue. The suspect then stabbed one of them, a man in his 20s, in the abdomen at about 8:30 p.m. The victim was also taken to hospital in critical condition but has since stabilized.

WPS stated their investigation revealed the suspect boarded a bus and then fled on foot. He was found swimming in the river after an extensive search.

Three residential fires under investigation

Winnipeg fire-paramedic crews responded to three residential fires on the night of Aug. 31, including a fire in a vacant property.

All three fires are still under investigation. They all happened within an hour in the 1900 block of William Avenue West, in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street, and in the 400 block of Langside Street.

Residents of a two-storey residence in the 1900 block of William Avenue West self-evacuated before crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building at about 8:37 p.m. Crews had the fire under control at 9:34 p.m. and assessed one person on scene, but didn’t transport them to hospital. No other injuries were reported. At 9:37 p.m., crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant home in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street. Crews searched the property and didn’t find any occupants. The fire was brought under control at 10:14 p.m.

Crews responded to the Langside Street fire at 9:42 p.m. Residents evacuated the two-storey house before crews arrived and no injuries were reported. Crews declared the fire under control at 10:28 p.m.
