Police watchdog to investigate man’s post-arrest death

8:42 PM

Manitoba’s police watchdog is set to investigate after a man died in a Winnipeg holding room.

The man was arrested regarding an outstanding warrant early Sunday morning. Less than four hours after his arrest, he was found unresponsive in the holding room and later pronounced dead in hospital. The Winnipeg Police Service issued a news release about the man’s death on Sunday afternoon, saying the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba would be assuming responsibility for the investigation.

The man was arrested at about 3:53 a.m. Sept. 15 in the 100 block of King Edward Street East. He was taken to WPS headquarters at 245 Smith St. at 4:23 a.m., cleared by an onsite central processing unit paramedic, and placed in a holding room. At 7:30 a.m., members of the WPS central processing unit found the man unresponsive when they conducted a scheduled morning check. The onsite paramedic provided emergency care and the man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The man’s name and age were not released.

The WPS release stated the Independent Investigation Unit was notified and has taken over the investigation.
