Priest arrested after investigation into decades-old sexual assault

10:16 AM

A two-year investigation has resulted in the arrest of an 81-year-old priest after a woman in her 60s alleged she had been sexually assaulted multiple times in the rural municipality of Riding Mountain West in the early 1970s.

The woman said she was 11 to 12-years-old when she was sexually assaulted over the course of two years while she was a parishioner at St. Elijah Romanian Orthodox Church. She reported the assault to Russell RCMP in March 2022.

A warrant was issued for Constantin Turcoane, 81, from Regina, Saskatchewan. He turned himself into police and has been released with a court date.

Police say the investigation took searches of historic church records, multiple interviews and working with church-related organizations. They believe there are other survivors and ask anyone with information to call Russell RCMP at 204-773-2675.
