Firm that collects overdue Manitoba court fines hit by cyberattack

The Manitoba government has said a third-party company that collects overdue court-ordered fines has been hit by a cyber incident.
“There is currently no evidence that the personal information of Manitobans was compromised as a result of this attack,” a government news release said Thursday.
The government said it has taken steps to contain and mitigate further potential exposure as it determines how many people with outstanding fines have been affected.
It said it is working with the independent provider, which has retained the services of a cybersecurity firm to probe the breach.
The incident has been reported to law enforcement, the Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity and the provincial ombudsman.
People with outstanding fines can go to any Manitoba court office in person or call the general phone line at 204-945-3156 for payment information. People with questions about collections and clearance certificates can contact the fine collections unit at 204-945-6414.
Police seek help to find missing woman

Winnipeg police are asking for the public’s help in locating a vulnerable missing woman.
A silver alert was issued Thursday for Mary Ann Ray, 64. She was last seen in the Crescentwood area Sunday night. She was reported missing Tuesday.
Ray is described as caucasian, 5-7 tall with a thin build, grey hair and brown eyes. She walks with a slouched posture. She was last seen wearing a light weight jacket/winter parka and was possibly wearing sweatpants.
The Winnipeg Police Service said it is concerned for Ray’s well-being and asks anyone with information to contact the missing persons unit at 204-986-6250.
Police identify victim and suspect in fatal stabbing

Winnipeg police have identified the victim and suspect in a fatal stabbing that happened at a West Broadway apartment building earlier this week.
Police said the homicide victim was 21-year-old Breanna George, who was living in Winnipeg and originally from Anishnaabeg of Naongashiing (Big Island First Nation) in northwestern Ontario.
She died in hospital after she was found with injuries at an apartment in the 200 block of Furby Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Police arrested a suspect in the building. Savannah Nashacappo-Badger, 23, is charged with second-degree murder and robbery.
Two charged with trafficking after traffic stop

RCMP arrested two people during a traffic stop in Russell after spotting illegal cigarettes and prescription drugs in the vehicle.
On Tuesday, RCMP pulled over a vehicle at about 1:15 p.m. Police noticed a package of unstamped cigarettes in the passenger side door. Prescription drugs were found during a subsequent search of the vehicle, RCMP said.
A 46-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were arrested at the scene. While the man was being arrested, he tried to destroy evidence, RCMP said.
Both were charged with trafficking offences. The man was also charged with possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Both were remanded into custody.
Mounties name suspect in fatal Thompson stabbing

RCMP have named a suspect in a fatal stabbing in Thompson earlier this week.
RCMP say major crimes investigators obtained a second-degree murder warrant for Gregory James Spence, 20, on Wednesday. Police think he’s still in the Thompson area.
A 31-year-old was found with stab wounds in the Eastwood area of the northern city at about 1 p.m. on Monday. He died in hospital. His name hasn’t been made public.
RCMP determined the stabbing occurred in a nearby home.
