Manitoba Museum’s Rupert Street entrance to temporarily close for renovations

5:03 PM

The Manitoba Museum’s Rupert Street entrance will be closed July 22 until November for renovations to improve accessibility.

During the closure, visitors are being asked to use the museum’s Main Street entrance, where a ramp will be installed.

The building’s foyer will also undergo comprehensive renovations to include seating areas, an updated boutique and a cafe.

The $4.7 million renovations for the entrance are being funded by the province. The cost of the $1.4 million foyer renovations are being shared by the Arts, Culture and Sport Community fund and the Manitoba Museum.

The museum expects to remain open during construction, with temporary closures anticipated in early fall to allow for asbestos abatement.

Fire damages Transcona home

2:20 PM

A house in Transcona sustained significant damage in a fire early Thursday.

Firefighters were sent to the two-storey home on the 500 block of Kanata Street at 3:45 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. Crews tried to fight the fire from inside but had to exit because of deteriorating conditions.

Crews used an aerial ladder to blast water at the fire and a drone to direct firefighters to hot spots. They later went inside to finish extinguishing the fire, which was declared under control at 5:28 a.m.

The occupants of the house — which sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage — got out before fire crews arrived. Three cats from the home are unaccounted for. Neighbourhood residents are asked to contact the Winnipeg Humane Society if they find a lost cat in the area, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said.

Earlier, at 9:39 p.m. Wednesday, crews were sent to a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house on the 600 block of Furby Street in the Spence neighbourhood.

The fire was contained to the room where it started and was declared under control at 10 p.m.

Everyone inside got out before crews arrived. One person was assessed by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital.

Both fires are under investigation.

New life-jacket loaner station in Hecla

10:54 AM

The province has added a life-jacket loaner station at a 12th provincial park.

The new station, where visitors can borrow life-jackets for free, has been set up at Gull Harbour in Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, the province said Thursday — the first day of summer.

Beach safety officers are stationed at three provincial park beaches — Birds Hill, Grand Beach (at West Beach) and Winnipeg Beach.

In a news release, Environment and Climate Change Minister Tracy Schmidt urged everyone — particularly boaters, children and weak swimmers — to wear life-jackets.
