Jets lose 4-1 to Golden Knights

The Winnipeg Jets matched a season-high winless streak by losing 4-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night.

Ivan Barbashev broke a tie with 5:29 left in regulation, then added an empty netter with 1:45 remaining to seal it. Jack Eichel also scored into the empty net.

Pavel Dorofeyev had opened the scoring in the first period, while Sean Monahan replied for Winnipeg in the middle frame.

The Jets went 0-for-5 on the power play.

Winnipeg now falls to 44-23-6, including 0-4-1 in the past five games. Vegas improves to 40-25-8.

The Jets return to action on Saturday night when they host the Ottawa Senators.

New deal for Brandon University faculty

Brandon University and its faculty association have ratified a four-year collective agreement.

The deal starts retroactively on April 1, 2023 and ends March 31, 2027. It was approved by the university’s board of governors Wednesday and by faculty in a multi-day ratification vote that ended Thursday, with 95 per cent of the vote in favour of the deal.

Faculty will see general wage increases of 2.5, 2.75, 3 and 3 per cent across each of the years, with additional scale adjustments of 0.5 per cent in each of the years. There is also a general lump sum amount of $1,800 for full-time members and $900 for part-time members.

New provincial veterinary position

The province is creating a new provincial veterinarian position focused on animal welfare.

The position will complement the work of the existing chief veterinary officer, who will now focus on the health of both commercial and companion animals, Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn said in a news release.

The government is also launching the Northern and Remote Veterinary Care Initiative and contributing $100,000 to the Winnipeg Humane Society for the expansion of its One Health Program. It is also giving the WHS another $100,000 to support Feed the Furbabies Canada’s work to support spay-and-neutering clinics and supply food and supplies for animals in need across Manitoba.

Folk Fest adds Grammy Award-winning rapper to lineup

Killer Mike, who won three Grammy Awards at the 2024 event in Los Angeles in February, will play the Winnipeg Folk Festival on July 12.

The Atlanta-born rapper and political activist will be Friday night’s windup act at the Big Blue @ Night stage, scheduled for 10:30 p.m. Tickets and passes for the festival, which runs July 11-14 at Birds Hill Provincial Park, are available at winnipegfolkfestival.ca.

Born Michael Render, Killer Mike began his recording career with Outkast in 2000, and has since performed as a solo act and with the group Run with Jewels.

Funds for Norway House roads

The Manitoba government will spend $21.5 million over multiple years to upgrade provincial roads in the Norway House area.

A proposed $21.5-million project focuses on repaving about 30 kilometres of provincial roads in and around Norway House Cree Nation and the Norway House community. The project also includes the restoration of Provincial Road 373.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is also advancing a feasibility study, funded jointly with the federal government, to replace the nearby Sea Falls ferry with a permanent bridge.

Gun fired in robbery, suspect sought

Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with a robbery where the culprit fired a gun.

Officers were sent to the 1000 block of McPhillips Street at about 10:35 p.m. on March 15 after a woman was robbed.

The suspect tried to rob the 25-year-old victim of her property while threatening her with a gun. The firearm was discharged, but the woman was not injured, and the suspect fled, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday.

Krell Curtis McDougall, 22, is wanted for the robbery and several weapon-related offences. Police said he is considered dangerous.

The WPS is asking anyone with information regarding McDougall’s whereabouts to call its major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).

Laws courts building locked after threat

The Manitoba Law Courts building has been temporarily closed amid reports of a bomb threat.

The doors to the building on York Avenue are locked.

Man wanted in Selkirk Avenue slaying

Police are searching for a suspect in connection with a slaying on Selkirk Avenue earlier this month.

Maxim Dale Garneau, 27, is wanted for second-degree murder for the killing of Edgar Allan Bear, 56. Police were sent to a home at 1246 Selkirk Ave. at about 4:40 p.m. on March 18. Bear, a member of Peguis First Nation, was living in Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Police Service released a photo of Garneau on Thursday and warned people that he is considered dangerous. The WPS is asking anyone with information regarding Garneau’s whereabouts to call its homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).

Province to replace paper health cards

The Kinew government is set to announce it will replace Manitoba’s paper health cards with plastic ones.

A provincial government spokesperson confirmed that an announcement on the change will come today.

Premier Wab Kinew has said he wants to do away with the paper cards and digitalize patients’ health records.
