8:48 PM

The Winnipeg Jets fell 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.

Not a lot went right for the visitors, who entered play with a sizzling 15-1-0 record including seven straight victories.

Captain Adam Lowry had Winnipeg’s only goal, while the usually potent power play went 0-for-5.

Jets backup goaltender Eric Comrie stopped 25 of 28 shots in suffering his first loss of the year.

Winnipeg now wraps up this three-game road trip on Saturday night in Sunrise as they face the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

Five people are facing firearms charges after police stopped an unregistered SUV on Sunday evening.

Officers saw a loaded .22-calibre revolver in the Jeep Grand Cherokee while trying to confirm the identity of the driver and the four passengers, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday. The gun’s serial number had been tampered with, police said.

Four men — ages 37, 35, 33 and 31 — and a 29-year-old woman were arrested. All are Winnipeg residents.

A man has been charged with manslaughter after a woman was killed in Norway House.

Derek Bruce Forbister, 35, was arrested and charged with manslaughter Thursday, RCMP said. He is a resident of the community.

Police said Tuesday that the death of the 23-year-old woman that morning was considered suspicious. She was found dead inside a home at about 7:30 a.m.

Forbister and the victim knew each other, RCMP said.

Three pedestrians hurt in two crashes

11:16 AM

Three pedestrians were taken to hospital after they were hit by vehicles in separate collisions Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The first incident happened at Portage Avenue and Tylehurst Street shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Preliminary information indicates a woman in her 30s stepped off a curb and into eastbound traffic, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday morning.

She was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable, the WPS said, adding the woman suffered serious injuries.

Officers were sent to Chief Peguis Trail between Henderson Highway and Main Street at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

Both drivers remained at the scenes, and no charges have been laid.

The WPS asked anyone who witnessed the collisions or has video to contact its traffic division at 204-986-7085, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Jail counsellor charged with sexually assaulting young inmate

10:33 AM

A man is accused of sexually assaulting an inmate while working as a counsellor at a Manitoba youth jail.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s sex crimes unit launched an investigation in November 2023 after a youth came forward and reported being sexually assaulted while incarcerated at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

An investigation revealed that the juvenile counsellor formed a relationship with her between 2022 and 2023.

“During that time he provided her with extra canteen items, and in exchange, he sexually assaulted her,” the WPS said in a news release Thursday.

Troy David Wensel of Winnipeg, 51, was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and obtaining sexual services from a person under 18 years. He was released with conditions prohibiting access to anyone under 18.

Public sector compensation disclosure documents released annually by the province show a T. Wensel was a juvenile counsellor on the government payroll as recently as March 31 — the latest report available. He was listed as earning more than $110,000 that fiscal year.

T. Wensel appears on such reports as early as 2020, when the government began publishing them proactively.

Sea Bears player Posthumus in critical condition after surgery

10:32 AM

Winnipeg Sea Bears centre Chad Posthumus is in critical condition and has been placed in intensive care after there were complications following surgery that repaired a large brain aneurysm.

The homegrown fan-favourite suffered the aneurysm during a training session Saturday and had been in stable condition as he waited for additional care.

Posthumus, 33 years, was the first player to sign a contract with the Sea Bears when the franchise joined the Canadian Elite Basketball League in 2023.

The team announced the update on social media Thursday morning.

“The Posthumus family, along with Chad’s partner, Meagan, are very grateful for the outpouring of support and continued prayers for Chad. We ask that you please provide them with privacy during this difficult time,” a part of the statement read.

The Sea Bears declined to provide additional comments.

Premier Wab Kinew said at an event Thursday morning that he was “very sad” to hear of Posthumus’s aneurysm.

“Chad’s a great homegrown product here, and we’re super-proud of him, and we wish him and his family well,” he said.
